GENERAL FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director and/or Aquatics Coordinator, the Aquatics Lead will work both as a Lead Lifeguard and as a Lead Swim Instructor. The Aquatics Lead will assist with the supervision and coordination of lifeguards and all pool activities and be responsible for lifeguard activities when assigned. The Lead will be responsible for assuring that all lifeguards are following procedures for the safety of all patrons in and around the pool area and creating a safe and positive atmosphere. The Aquatics Lead will also teach private and group swim lessons, developing and implementing high-quality, engaging, and effective YMCA swim lessons to all participants. The Lead will create appropriate lesson plans to ensure student learning objectives are met and exceeded and promote a positive atmosphere encouraging growth, safety, and engagement.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Previous lifeguard experience and current Lifeguard certification required; YMCA lifeguard experience preferred
• Current Basic Life Support, First Aid, and AED certification
• Emergency oxygen administration certification or ability to obtain within 60 days
• Ability to respond to safety and emergencies
• Ability to relate well and communicate effectively to a diverse group of individuals, in all circumstances
• Pass a comprehensive background screening
• Experience with swim lessons instruction preferred
• Current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification or willing to complete certification training within 60 days
• Be 18 years of age or older

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

• Enforces all aquatic policies and procedures, ensuring that safety procedures are followed always

• Works collaboratively with leadership staff to maintain and review accurate records of pool chemical levels per facility plan
• Replenishes first aid and other supplies as needed; informs supervisor when running low on supplies
• Attend monthly in-services and other training
• Maintain cleanliness of pool area, equipment, and facility when not performing primary duties
• Sets up and stores equipment for recreational swims and assists instructors with class setup
• Supervises lifeguards and operations of the pool during assigned shifts, rotating guards, scheduling breaks, and determining hours when appropriate based on pool usage and the need for additional guards
• Oversee and direct first aid treatment and ensure that all hazardous materials or contamination is properly cleaned up
• Accurately record and submit records and incident reports as required
• Assists supervisor with special projects, events, lesson plans, bulletin boards, etc., as assigned
• Strong verbal and written communication skills

• Attends assigned in service and other aquatics training and assists with setting up and conducting training
• Attends staff meetings and training as required and completes all required online training which includes child abuse prevention training within 7 days of hire
• Upholds YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting, and risk management. Adheres to policies related to boundaries with youth

ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS AND DUTIES:

• Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations by mandated reporting requirements
• Responsible for general housekeeping tasks to ensure the workspace is always clean
• Submits hours worked accurately on the electronic time card, within timelines for supervisor approval

• Flexible schedule needed as on occasion may need to work evenings and/or weekends
• Other duties as assigned by the supervisor

• Driving record which meets or exceeds YMCA standards, driver records request will be submitted

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT

• Schedule may include evening and/or early morning, and/or weekend hours
• Office/fitness/aquatics environment with occasional interruptions
• Ability to work inside and outside (environments include humidity, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions) year-round

• Physical ability to perform all skills required of a lifeguard, and have the mobility to properly use aquatic equipment to rescue a 200lb person
• Ability to hear noises and distress signals in the aquatics environment including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility, with or without accommodation
• Ability to see and observe all sections of an assigned zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation
• physical and mental ability to respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid effectively
