Summary of Position
Under the supervision of the Senior Associate Athletic Director, this position provides wide-ranging support services for intercollegiate student-athletes in the areas of student-athlete wellness and academic support.

Regarding student-athlete wellness, the Assistant Athletic Director is responsible for coordinating and facilitating a comprehensive education program to enhance welfare and assist in the personal and professional development of the department’s student-athletes. In addition, this position provides services designed to minimize the impact of emotional distress on the academic and personal pursuits of student athletes through effective case management and the coordination of care between campus and community resources. This position will identify how to best utilize campus resources, identify resources available outside of the campus and integrate innovative programs in areas such as, but not limited to: diversity education, career placement, student-athlete welfare, leadership development, community involvement, mentoring, financial management skills, sexual assault and violence prevention training, and stress/time management skills.

Regarding academic support, the Assistant Athletic Director is responsible for mentoring, counseling, and providing proactive monitoring to student-athletes in assigned sports. This position must be able to interpret student-athlete needs and academic progress and provide individualized service. This position requires interaction with coaching staffs ensuring they are kept apprise of any issues regarding members of their team. This individual will be responsible for monitoring study hall as well as conducting study skill workshops. This position will also be an integral part of the recruiting process by meeting with recruits regarding academics and/or student-athlete development programs.

Successful candidate must (1) have a bachelor’s degree preferably in Social Work, Human Services, Health Education/Promotion, Education, Student Affairs or Counseling (2) Experience working within a Division I Athletic Department; including familiarity with NCAA eligibility rules and regulations.

Additional Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualities of the candidate include: (1) demonstrated experiences in planning, organizing and coordinating educational support program for college students; (2) demonstrated sensitivity to multicultural issues and proven ability to interact with diverse individuals and groups; (3) demonstrated expertise in case management; (4) skill in working well under pressure to prioritize and manage multiple situations and to coordinate these efforts as a part of a multidisciplinary team; (5) energy and flexibility to manage the professional demands of a challenging workload while maintaining positive and healthy perspectives and relationships; (6) self-motivated, self-directed commitment to high professional ideals; (7) excellent oral and written communication skills; (8) experience in college mental health, including crisis assessment, brief intervention, confidentiality requirements, and referral; and (9) experience as a student-athlete.
