Position Summary: Apex Logistics International (LAX) Inc. seeks a Chemical Safety Engineer; qualified candidates must possess a master’s degree in chemical engineering and Transportation of Hazardous Materials Certificate. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify and evaluate risks of hazards and dangerous chemicals during transportation processes;
  • Develop and maintain safety procedures for dealing with hazardous materials and dangerous chemicals during transportation processes;
  • Maintain and update correct coding on hazardous materials and dangerous chemicals for identification and transportation purposes;
  • Evaluate hazardous materials and processes to ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations, including rules associated with the transportation industry for hazardous materials and dangerous chemicals;
  • Ensure VWR Single Shipper Packaging is compliant with safety regulations and timely re-certified, work with packaging suppliers, testing facilities, and others to coordinate recertification in a timely manner;
  • Interpret safety regulations and keep up with the latest changes involving regulatory compliance for hazardous materials;
  • Conduct or coordinate trainings with stakeholders in the chemical business to develop processes and procedures with the proposed and required changes with regulatory compliance for hazardous materials;
  • Provide technical and regulatory advice to Export Compliance Specialists;
  • Investigate industrial accidents, perform data-entry of incident reports, determine causes, and develop preventative measures;
  • Monitor the accurate loading and offloading of hazardous materials either manually or mechanically in accordance with respective handling procedures;
  • Ensure applicable paperwork matches parts shipments quantities serviceable tags and is in accordance with Department of Transportation regulations;
  • Follow and apply IATA/FAA regulations to hazardous material shipping via Air, collaborate with Airlines for acceptable quantity and Hazardous Class shipments
  • Comply with all handling and documentation requirements prior to shipping
  • Attend and contribute to dangerous goods meetings conferences and/or safety committees;
  • Manage stock of all supplies required for shipments (e.g. DG labeling shipping paperwork fiberboard boxing packing supplies etc.)

Education / Experience

  • Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering is required
  • Must have Transportation of Hazardous Materials Certificate
