This is a Surfacing Plans Project Engineer position with the Surfacing Plans Group in the Office of Materials and Surfacing. The purpose of this position is to assemble surfacing plans for transportation projects throughout the state. Duties will include gathering available project information, developing surfacing/resurfacing plans, calculating surfacing quantities, coordinating plans assembly with other SDDOT offices, initiating plan reviews, and delivering final plans for bid letting.

Work is normally in an office environment with eight-hour work days. A flexible work schedule and remote work requests will be considered.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Only applicants with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering field will be considered.

Knowledge of:

• general engineering principles as they relate to transportation facilities;
• construction materials and surfacing types used for highway construction.

Skill to:

• communicate effectively
• manage multiple projects concurrently;
• operate a computer and software used for developing plans and computing quantities.

Ability to:

• display high standards of ethical conduct;
• attend to all details of assignments and complete work properly, accurately, and thoroughly;
• display a high level of effort and commitment towards completing assignments and goals;
• set priorities, schedule activities, acquire resources, and monitor progress to ensure the successful completion of projects and assignments;

• prepare, interpret, and use engineering plans, maps, specifications, and technical reports;
• interpret and apply state and federal laws/rules and follow department standards;
• treat customers courteously and be responsive to their needs;
• listen attentively to others and clearly convey information and ideas;
• work cooperatively with others and promote a friendly work climate.
