Job description

Qualified candidate is responsible for reviewing inpatient, outpatient, and emergency room records and accurately abstracting and assigning appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes using ICD-10 and CPT classification systems. Requires extensive knowledge in medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology, and coding guidelines. A coder is recognized as an expert and responsible for maintaining a 98% accuracy rate in the assignment of codes with the use of an encoder/grouper or book if deemed appropriate.

Associate must work in-house 6 months and show competency in working accurately and independently before working remotely.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receive and review patient charts and documents for accuracy
  • Ensure that all codes are current and active
  • Report missing or incomplete documentation
  • Meet daily coding production
  • Update and maintain document lists
  • Ensure accurate charge entries
  • Serves as resource regarding insurance resolutions and coding questions
  • Follows coding guidelines and legal requirements to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations
  • Performs additional duties assigned by Health Information Management Director as needed

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Medical Coding Certificate: CCA, CCS, RHIT, RHIA, or AHIMA license; meet state licensure requirements
  • Maintain coding certification and attend in-service training as required
  • Understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology
  • Ability to work independently or as an active member of a team
  • Strong computer skills in data entry, coding, and knowledge of the EMR, and Microsoft Office applications
  • Accurate and precise attention to detail
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Goal-oriented, organized team member
  • Proficient in the use of an encoder/group
