Laboratory Supervisor - Pathology

HCA Houston Healthcare Conroe is a tertiary acute care 342 bed hospital that has been serving the community for more than 75 years. It provides a 24-hour designated Level II trauma center, Level III neonatal intensive care unit, cardiac care services, women's center, daVinci robotic surgery, neurosciences, pediatric care, rehabilitation therapy, sleep center, radiology, hyperbaric medicine, diagnostic/imaging services, and wound care facility.

HCA Houston Healthcare Conroe is affiliated with HCA Houston Healthcare, part of the HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division. The division is a comprehensive network of hospitals, outpatient surgery centers, emergency centers and diagnostic imaging facilities in greater Houston, Corpus Christi and South Texas. Facilities include: 17 hospitals, nine ambulatory care centers, 13 off-campus emergency centers, and a regional transfer center


What you will do in this role:
  • Provide day-to-day supervision testing personnel. Must be accessible to testing personnel to provide on-site, telephone or electronic consultation.
  • Interview job applicants for the department. Provide orientation to all testing personnel and medical technology students.
  • Evaluate the competency of all testing personnel and assure the staff maintains their competency to perform test procedures and report test results promptly, accurately and proficiently.
  • Evaluate and document the performance of individuals at least semiannually during the first year the individual tests patient specimens. Thereafter, evaluations must be performed at least annually unless test methodology or instrumentation changes, in which case, prior to reporting patient test results, the individual's performance must be reevaluated to include the use of the new test methodology.
  • Identify training needs and assure that each individual performing test receives regular in-service training and education appropriate for the type and complexity of the laboratory services performed.
  • Provide documented personal feedback to each staff member at least semi-annually.
  • Assure daily feedback to staff concerning their job performance.
  • Assure employees follow safety standards and practices.
  • Schedule department personnel. Cooperate with other supervisors to meet the needs for laboratory staffing while complying with staffing standards.
  • Maintain professional & responsive interaction with internal & external customers.
  • Actively model the Power of One Gulf Coast Division Standards of Behavior.
  • Assure the work flow provides stats and priority tests within prescribed turnaround times to provide optimum patient care.
  • Maintain technical proficiency so he/she can assist any area of their department if needed.
  • In conjunction with the Pathologists, select test methodologies that are most appropriate for the clinical use of the test results. Factors would include at least accuracy, precision, reliability and cost.
  • In conjunction with the Pathologists, select equipment.
  • Write and/or review and revise procedures and maintenance protocols. See that procedures and manuals are reviewed according to schedule.
  • Assure compliance with proficiency testing and other regulatory agency standards. Ensure program is commensurate with services offered.
  • Resolve technical problems and assure that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications
  • Establish the over-all goals of the quality control program so it is appropriate for the testing performed. In conjunction with the Pathologist, establish the parameters for acceptable levels of analytic performance. Ensure that these levels are maintained throughout the entire testing process.
  • Manage supply inventory while complying with HCA guidelines.
  • Ensure that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning.
  • Develop PI indicators and compile information. Make recommendation, ensure corrective action and evaluate effectiveness.
  • Serves as a clinical resource to staff. Assists staff with conflict resolution & problem solving. Assumes active role in the development & mentoring of staff.


What qualifications you will need:

  • Four years recent experience (in high complexity testing).
  • Bachelor or Associate degree in Medical Technology or the equivalent. MT or HT certification preferred.
  • Must be detail oriented and able to operate mechanical, electrical and computer controlled instrumentation. Must possess good communication skills and be to supervise technologists and other laboratory personnel.
