Under the direction of the Director of Building Services, the Lead Engineer coordinates technical staff, other skilled trades and contractors to meet facility and operations requirements. The Lead Engineer is responsible for keeping the facility, including its mechanical and electrical systems, in good working order including preventive maintenance, field inspections, equipment evaluations, and steam plant.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the primary liaison between the Technicians, skilled trades and other Museum staff.
  • Ensures that the Director of Building Services is kept informed of all aspects of technical operations of the Museum.
  • Coordinates the day-to-day activities of technicians including (distribution) allocation of work assignments and provides technical status reports.
  • Ensures that technicians are aware of the responsibilities of their position. Develops and assists in the practical training of Museum technical staff.
  • Manages the operation of the computerized energy management and climate control systems.
  • Responsible for monitoring HVAC repairs, building maintenance and preventative maintenance. Works with Museum Technicians to construct necessary items for gallery exhibitions.
  • Attends planning meetings involving work related to the technicians and/or Museum facility
  • Coordinates the technical aspects of the renovation and/or installation of galleries, including coordination between the A-Technicians (and), B-Technicians and other skilled trades.
  • Oversees and coordinates the carpentry functions related to the production and installation of gallery exhibitions.
  • Responsible for HVAC, plumbing, electrical and other repairs to building systems, equipment, fixtures and the facility.
  • Performs carpentry, maintenance and repair work at the Museum.
  • Makes recommendations and places orders for materials and equipment to maintain necessary stock, spare parts, and complete repairs.
  • Supervises and assists outside contractors in preparing proposals, making repairs and performing contract requirements.
  • Available for flexible schedule including some weekends and some evenings as required by projects and maintenance schedules.
  • Attends training identified by the Museum to maintain or improve general or specialized technical skills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

This position requires a proactive, hands-on approach, and we are seeking an individual who has a desire to make a huge impact as a strategic leadership professional.

  • High school degree plus specialized training certifications.
  • Knowledge of the technical aspects of various trades including, HVAC systems, steam boiler operation, air handlers, (and) chillers, electrical distribution, plumbing distribution and carpentry.
  • 10 years maintenance experience in an institutional setting and at least 3 years supervisory experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, computer proficiency and demonstrated organizational and supervisory skills.
  • Detailed understanding of building electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Working knowledge of building architectural and mechanical plans
  • Knowledge of repair and maintenance procedures for building structures, mechanical equipment, utility systems, and temperature control.
  • Black Seal High Pressure Boiler License
  • Blue Seal Refrigeration License
  • Additional Technical Certifications a plus.
  • NJ Drivers License
