Starting salary: $18.50 an hour (depends on experience)


Hours and Schedule:
This is a full-time day position based on a 40-hour work week. Weekly schedule will be based on the needs of the organization, and night shift and weekends may be occasionally needed to accomplish certain duties or to help cover vacation schedules, or call outs for other team members. You must be available for on-call for emergency support services and be able to drive locally between properties regularly. Flexibility is a key component of this role.


Skagit Valley Family YMCA is currently looking for a quality Maintenance / Custodian Technician to help maintain and support our staff in our maintenance and custodial departments. You will ensure that everyone can enjoy the Y in a safe manner, and that our main facility on Hoag Road and other sites are in shape to provide the quality programing we are known for.

As a Maintenance / Custodian Technician you would be responsible for executing your position's responsibilities in driving company success through performing the following key tasks to the highest standards:


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate through leadership, work place safety: follow safety rules and guidelines, lead by example and encourage safety practices in colleagues.
  • Perform minor repairs on plumbing and clogged drains;
  • Perform minor repairs on electrical circuits;
  • Repair or replace lights, fixtures, ballasts; Perform minor carpentry work;
  • Paint offices, classrooms, restrooms, and patch holes in walls as required;
  • Hang equipment and materials on walls;
  • Perform routine scheduled maintenance work on facilities and equipment;
  • Change filters and perform periodic maintenance on HVAC systems;
  • Report defective fixtures or equipment to appropriate personnel;
  • Mop and wax floors; Clean and sanitize restrooms and shower facilities (toilets, sinks, fixtures, floors, showers, etc.);
  • Wash interior and exterior windows and entrance doors;
  • Empty trash/waste baskets and recycle containers;
  • Sweep, dust, vacuum and clean hallways, offices, classrooms, entryways and sidewalks;
  • Review inventory of supplies and materials for assigned building and request supplies as needed;
  • Perform chemical testing and routine mechanical maintenance in pool mechanical room;
  • Respond to the requests of the Membership and Staff with a high degree of professionalism and customer service.
  • Move or rearrange classroom furniture and equipment, and move and set up furniture for special events;
  • Pressure wash sidewalks, buildings and other exterior surfaces;
  • Deliver supplies and materials;
  • Prioritize work orders and complete assignments with minimal supervision and in a timely manner;
  • Assure that building doors and windows are locked, alarms are set, and lights are turned off;
  • Report unsecured areas and unauthorized occupants to appropriate personnel;
  • Maintain, repair and operate truck mount carpet machine;
  • May mix chemicals and maintain or refill dilution control units in custodial areas;
  • May shovel snow, apply ice melt compounds, operate power snow removal equipment;
  • May instruct other personnel in routine maintenance or custodial techniques;
  • May perform as a lead in a team situation when covering open areas and on large scale operations.

  • Basic plumbing concepts and practices;
  • Basic electrical concepts and practices;
  • Basic carpentry;
  • Basic HVAC maintenance;
  • Basic mechanical systems of commercial buildings;
  • Equipment repair and maintenance;
  • Custodial cleaning techniques;
  • Safe handling of cleaning and pool chemicals;
  • Prioritize work; work with limited supervision;
  • Work with a diverse group of individuals.

What you will need:

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years maintenance and custodial background preferred
  • Good verbal and written communication and basic computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  • Possess a valid WA State Drivers License with good driving record and current insurance.
  • Prior to employment, the candidate must pass a criminal background check.

  • Will spend about 70% of their time on their feet walking, lifting (50 75lbs.), climbing ladders, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing and pulling.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, the ability to adjust and the ability to distinguish colors.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, can occasionally reach high volumes.
  • The employee must be able to interact professionally and courtesy with members, staff, volunteers, vendors and any dissatisfied individuals.
  • Will need to use sound reasoning, common sense and extreme care while handling chemicals.
  • Employee will be required to work outdoors in inclement weather as needed, as well as the use of ladders and ability to work heights as needed.
