    Position Title: Outdoor School Equity and Inclusion Coordinator

    Reports To: Site Supervisor and Curriculum & Training Specialist

    FLSA Status: Exempt

    Compensation: $22.97 - $27.45 (Hourly Rate)
    NW REGIONAL ESD'S MISSION STATEMENT: In Partnership with the communities we serve, Northwest Regional ESD improves student learning by providing equitable access to high quality services and support.

    General Description:
    The Equity & Inclusion Advocate is a grant funded position to ensure all students have access to and feel welcomed, engaged, and included in Outdoor School programs across Oregon. This position will include mentoring, coaching, and teaching as well as leading games, activities, and campfire with 5th and 6th grade students, high school volunteers, and other Outdoor School staff. Additionally, this position will provide needed one-on-one support to ensure all students can fully engage and participate in Outdoor School. The Equity & Inclusion Advocate will be responsible for gathering qualitative data around the experiences of students of color at Outdoor School, as well as, quantitative data to help continuously improve the Outdoor School program.

    This position will be part of the residential Outdoor School team, but work will also be supported and coordinated by the Curriculum and Training Specialist who is based out of the Hillsboro office. Each Equity and Inclusion Advocate, will be based at their own site, who work both with their respective sites and each other as an Equity and Inclusion Team to discuss progress and provide ideas and support.
    Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.     • Three (3) years leading equity and inclusion initiatives in educational settings preferred.
    • Bilingual (Spanish or relevant languages spoken in local student populations), prefered.

    PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

    • Interest in, coursework, volunteer or work experience with coursework in education, social work, environmental education, social sciences, or other relevant fields.
    • Paid or volunteer experience in before or after school programming, Outdoor School, summer camp, or other residential camp programs preferred.
    • Prior experience working with diverse groups of students, especially from communities who have been underrepresented or excluded from access to power and decision making.
    • Interest in or desire to work with students who receive special education services or have a variety of individual needs.
    • A strong commitment to racial justice within education.
    • Knowledge of or interest in Trauma Informed Care (TIC), Restorative Justice, and social emotional learning.
    • Able to work dependably both as an individual and as a member of a close-knit team.
    • Flexibility with changing work priorities and working in a new position.
    • Desire and ability to work successfully with children and adults in a residential work environment.
    • Strong communication and conflict resolution skills.
    • Strong recommendations from previous work and/or volunteer experiences.
    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Include the following. Performs some or all of the following tasks. Other Duties may be assigned. The duties listed below are not inclusive, but characteristic of the type and level of work assigned for this position.
    A. Work as a member of the Outdoor School site staff to improve the educational practices that negatively impact student learning outcomes and feelings of belonging within the program.

    B. Work directly with students who need extra support, especially students who have been traditionally marginalized in educational settings.

    C. Develop and implement data collection strategies to better inform educational practices at Outdoor School sites.

    D. Coach and mentor High School Student Leaders and peers around best practices in educational equity and inclusion.

    E. Conduct empathy interviews with students, Student Leaders, and staff from historically underserved and marginalized communities in order to better understand their experiences at Outdoor School and how they can be better supported within the program

    F. Perform other duties as assigned.

    On August 19, 2021 Governor Brown ordered all public and private school teachers, educators, support staff, substitutes and volunteers to be vaccinated by October 18, 2021 or six weeks after FDA approval, whichever is later. Since the governor’s announcement, a COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech) has received regular Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval meaning October 18, 2021 is confirmed as the mandatory deadline for vaccination. "Fully vaccinated" is defined as 14 days after receiving all required doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine (currently two shots of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, or one shot of Johnson & Johnson vaccine).

    Starting October 18, 2021, testing will no longer be an option as the alternative to vaccination. All Northwest Regional ESD staff, substitutes, contractors, interns and volunteers will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 per the August 19, 2021 order from Gov. Kate Brown. All staff members will need to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Exemptions may be made only for eligible medical or religious reasons. There will not be an option to opt out for other reasons or choose testing in lieu of vaccination, under the state mandate . In order to support students and families, the essential functions of this position may require physical presence in the workplace. All public health protocols will be followed.
