The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a Transportation Planner II in our Materials and Research Division.

The pay rate for this position is $21.606. (Effective July 1, 2023, the pay rate will increase to $22.686).

Examples of Work
  • Utilize reports generated from Integrated Highway Inventory (IHI) information within GIS software.
  • Join reports to accurately represent the information visually in GeoMedia/Esri Arc.
  • Perform segmentation and calibration.
  • Utilize reports to detect changes within the IHI to compare with the Linear Referencing System (LRS) and make updates to the LRS.
  • Set up GeoMedia County and City files including creation of the sheet files for distribution and connections to feature databases and warehouses.
  • Create GeoMedia/Esri Arc Feature Databases.
  • Create shape files or data warehouses from GeoMedia/Esri Arc for others requesting this information including Federal Highway Administration for the Highway Performance Monitoring System submittal.
  • Utilize information provided by coworkers, such as annexation ordinances, to update city limit boundaries within GeoMedia and check all 500+ Cities for accuracy yearly.
  • Submit maps to the Cities for Lane Mile Reporting.
  • Review National Functional Classification System and create maps for submittal and approval of Cities, Counties, and Federal Highway Administration.
  • Work in various GIS software environments such as Hexagon and Esri products.
  • Use publishing software to create accurate maps for the Department of Transportation website and public users.
  • Use GeoMedia and Esri Arc to perform analysis for verification of road information.
  • Create specialty maps as requested.
  • Update and maintain records in the IHI database.
Qualifications / Requirements

REQUIREMENTS: Six years of post high school technical or pre-professional experience in planning, designing, or constructing highways or other transportation infrastructure; or in developing computer models/applications relative to transportation planning or engineering work or Bachelor's degree in construction management or design, transportation planning or forecasting, engineering, or related transportation field and two years experience in planning, designing, or constructing highways or other transportation infrastructure, or in developing computer models/applications to forecast, plan, evaluate, design, or construct transportation or engineering projects or equivalent combination of post high school education and experience in the fields mentioned above.

PREFERRED: Eight years of pre-professional engineering experience, three of which are in the field of highway planning, design, construction, or maintenance. Education or experience using GIS software. Experience writing queries to extract information from relational databases.

OTHER: Must have a valid driver's license or ability to provide authorized independent transportation. Regular and reliable attendance is required.
