About the Apprenticeship Program

Movement is actively looking to build diverse routesetting teams that represent the communities we serve. The Routesetting Apprenticeship provides an opportunity for new setters with limited/no experience to learn the ins and outs of the Movement setting program, and to develop a core set of skills and an understanding of the routesetting role.

This is a temporary position that will run for 6 months. Upon completion of the program, future setting opportunities are possible but not guaranteed. The first 4-6 weeks of the program are intended to provide a basic introduction to the role, workflow, and safety considerations; the remainder of the program will be an opportunity to gain experience putting this knowledge into practice. Apprentice setters are asked to set 1-3 days per week, depending on the skills learned, needs of the gyms in the region, and potential commitments to other positions.

About the role

As a hold washer, you will work with the setting team to learn the ins and outs of the Movement setting program and learn to become an efficient routesetter. Apprentice Routesetters report directly to the Assistant Director of Setting (Head Routesetter) of their home gym and will be responsible for managing the workflow of their day in an efficient and productive manner.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Assist with washing and sorting holds
  • Maintain tidy setting area throughout the day, and help clean area at the end of the day
  • Additional tasks and projects as assigned, based on skills learned and needs of the gyms (including but not limited to: assist anchor/safety inspections, set the system board, set for and work setting-related events and competitions, attend required setter meetings)

What success looks like:

  • Maintain a clean hold room, hold washing station and keep up with the demands of hold washing.

Bonus points for:

  • Lead climbing proficiency
  • Ability to climb at least 5.11 and/or V5

Additional Details

  • This is a temporary, part-time position - upon completion of the program, future setting opportunities are possible but not guaranteed
  • Compensation for this role starts at $18.00
  • This role is based in Movement Englewood – applicants will be assigned a primary location but must be available to work at all regional locations
