Position Overview:

UMBC is accepting applications for the position of Associate Athletic Trainer. The Associate Athletic Trainer is a health care professional responsible for working under the direction of the University’s Team physicians, as prescribed by state licensure statues, for supervising the prevention, care, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical care of illnesses to UMBC’s student-athletes. In coordination with the University’s Team physicians, the Associate Athletic Trainer will ensure that all participants on intercollegiate teams have the proper physical examinations before, during practice (as needed), and competition to maximize the effectiveness of the student-athlete while ensuring his/her physical wellbeing and minimizing liability to the department and the University. The Associate Athletic Trainer will, as directed by the Director of Sports Medicine, act as a primary administrator and supervisor of the sports medicine staff and facilities in the absence the Director of Sports Medicine, as assigned.

Position's primary responsibility is Women's Basketball. Travels with team assignments as designated by the Director of Sports Medicine.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Provides primary medical care in collaboration with Team Physicians, consulting physicians, University Health Services and/or other Allied Health Providers.
  • Provides clinical evaluations, examinations, and diagnosis of emergent, acute, subacute, and chronic neuromuscular conditions and certain medical conditions in order to minimize subsequent impairments, functional limitations, disability, and societal limitations to the University student-athletes.
  • Implements and supervises prevention of injury and illness guidelines, including but not limited to environmental concerns, acclimatization and general well-being.
  • Delivers rehabilitative services under physician guidance utilizing clinical decision making in constructing and supervising rehabilitation protocols.
  • Implements and supervises the return to play of injuries and illnesses to University student-athletes in collaboration with Strength & Conditioning Coaches.
  • Provides and supervises emergency care of injuries or illnesses to University student athletes, including the use of emergency equipment and supplies.
  • Conducts annual pre-participation screenings to ensure that all University student athletes are in NCAA compliance as per the NCAA Sports Medicine Handbook.
  • Maintains athletic injury, illness, drug and treatment records and maintains confidentiality of the records according to HIPPA and FERPA guidelines.
  • Collaborates with team physicians and Retriever Integrated Health Services and other outside medical providers regarding student-athlete health care.
  • Collaborates with outside physicians and other health care professionals regarding student athlete health care. Schedules outside medical appointments, with particular attention to the student-athletes primary medical insurance, obtaining needed referrals or pre-certification of procedures as required.
  • Assists student-athletes arrange for transportation to and from physician or medical appointments as needed. Accompanies student-athletes to physician appointments when deemed necessary for continuity of care.

Administrative job co-responsibilities may include the following areas:

  • Maintenance and quality control of equipment and facilities
  • Screening medical certification planning
  • Insurance claims
  • Educating athletes, coaches, and peers on injuries and illnesses, safety procedures, and NATA and NCAA medical compliance related issues.

The incumbent must also maintain appropriate professional certifications, licensure, and continuing education requirements.

The position's primary responsibility is Women's Basketball and will travel with team assignments as designated by the Director of Sports Medicine.



Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree from accredited CaATe program in athletic training.
  • Three years of Athletic Training or relevant experience. This may include experience as a Graduate Assistant or Graduate Intern.
  • NATA BOC certification with continuing education requirements.(ATC)
  • State of Maryland Athletic Trainer License Eligible
  • CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer

Note: Position requires team travel.



Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree-Athletic Training
