Summary

Interviews arrestees, prepares identification documentation, pulls and reviews criminal histories, reviews and assesses arrestees for mental health and medical needs, reviews arrestees' status to be in the County, collects information for arraignment docket, collects financial information for the magistrate courts, submits arrestee information for the arraignment docket, and obtains arrestees' signature on documentation after magistrates set the bond amount and conditions. Maintains files and documentation. Answers telephones and addresses or redirects concerns. Processes requests for service paperwork from inmates, citizens, and internal sources. Facilitates the movement of inmates through the booking process while assisting Detention Officers and court staff through the booking, magistration, and release processes.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Verifies receipt of correct intake documents to facilitate the initial entry of inmate information. Reviews agency teletypes, warrants of arrest, court proceedings, and other legal documents to determine what form and class of hold to be placed on arrestee.
  • Enters and transfers legal documents and personal information required by law to magistrates so proper bond determination can be made including mental health, financial status, MHMR, and citizenship and consular information.
  • Calculates time and money owed for court costs and determines length of time and assignment of release date based on review of legal documents such as court proceedings to comply with decisions made by courts.
  • Recognizes and flags inmate folders as needed to be sent for determination of citizenship status by interviewing inmates regarding place of birth, social security number, and citizenship status.
  • Photographs inmates and pulls, researches, and reviews inmates' criminal history to provide summary to classification. Updates and verifies by secondary interview that original information provided is accurate and complete.
  • Assists with creating court docket for daily arraignments that includes verifying that proper forms have been provided to the Magistrate. Collects documents once signed by the judge to obtain inmate signatures and provide inmates with a copy of legal documentation.
  • Assists with administrative special projects such as auditing inmate folders to determine if proper commitment, medical screening, mental health, and other required documents are present in accordance with State mandates and Jail Standards.
  • Maintains paper and automated records.
  • Answers phone calls and works to resolve issues related to calls from law enforcement agencies, courts, and judges.
  • Controls and coordinates public access to inmate visitation. Coordinates with citizens and officers where inmates are housed to get visitors to the correct location for visits to occur between family, counselors, attorneys, and other professionals.
  • Provides professional and technical assistance to the Release area of Booking including sending teletypes to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies regarding release to the appropriate agency.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent. One (1) year of work experience required, law enforcement and customer service experience strongly preferred. Current and valid driver license, TCIC/NCIC certification within six (6) months of employment. Ability to assume responsibilities without direct supervision. Ability to handle confidential information and criminal histories. Basic knowledge of court system and procedures. Strong ability to use computers and telephones. Must have strong typing skills and communication skills.


Physical Demands and Work Environment & Other Requirements

While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to bend, carry, climb, hear, keyboard, kneel, lift below the waist, lift overhead, lift to the side/twist, reach overhead, see near, sit, squat, stand, stoop, talk, walk, and work alone and with others. Must be willing to work overtime, weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, evenings and nights.

There is exposure to household type cleaning agents (such as diluted bleach, alcohol based window cleaner, chlorine based cleanser); and occasional exposure to pesticides. There is occasional exposure to inmate control devices that emit pepper agents via aerosol spray, gel or foam. There is the potential of exposure to toxic smoke.
