Position Summary:
Responsible for planning and conducting research on assigned projects under general direction leading to development of novel or breakthrough materials that can significantly grow our business.
Primary Duties:
  • Plan research on assigned projects under general direction leading to development of new organic and inorganic elastomer compounds and materials for aerospace industry
  • Conduct experiments using systematic approach following scientific methodology. Continually improve these techniques to better the design of experiments. Evaluate the test data, maintain good records and organize test results in tabular or graphical format.
  • Direct and co-ordinate activities of lab technicians, research assistants or entry level chemists as required.
  • Perform routine chemical tests, analyses and investigations to characterize material properties through evaluation of various samples leading to the development of new or improved materials or manufacturing processes.
  • Work with production, purchasing and quality departments to facilitate all aspect of the process of introduction of a new chemical formulation or a new process.
  • Follow all the safety practices and policies established in TA safety manual. Read MSDS thoroughly before using a new chemical. Label properly all the R&D chemicals. Dispose off the needed waste in an appropriate manner.
  • Maintain close contact with R&D Management and provide reports, status updates as needed.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform routine analyses as needed.
  • Maintain detailed records of test procedure and results in a laboratory notebook.
  • Work with various vendors to characterize, baseline quality of various incoming raw materials and intermediates. Establish quality control guidelines and test procedures.
  • Provide technical expertise to trouble shoot production or quality problems as needed.
  • Review various customer specifications and provide comments leading to acceptance or rejection of the specification. Provide assistance as needed to maintain database for various products, formulations and specification.
  • Provide guidelines to quality organization regarding the new test procedures, new specifications and new materials.
  • Provide guidelines to production regarding mixing or molding of all new elastomer or resinous materials introduced in the work place.
  • Special projects as assigned.
Basic Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, in chemistry, chemical engineering or materials sciences.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience working as a chemist or technician is required.
  • Effective communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to perform under pressure due to the type of work and departmental standards.
  • Ability to multitask and perform under pressures to meet key milestones of development projects.
  • Judgment to deal with complex situations.
  • Ability to work with non technical professionals, skilled or semi-skilled workers.
  • High level of concentration, alertness and adaptability to change.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials sciences. 3+ years of experience in elastomer formulation, development, and testing. Advanced understanding of cure chemistry and crosslinking reaction in rubber materials and proficient in using lab/analytical equipment (DSC, TGA, Universal Tensile tester, Impact/resilience tester, Rheometer, microscopy, GC/MS, Internal mixer, mills, environmental chambers and etc.) characterizing elastomers, thermosets and composite materials.
  • Experience in structural adhesive formulation and testing is preferred
  • Knowledge or experience in Liquid silicone rubber injection molding (LSR) is a plus
  • Knowledge or experience in coated fabrics and calendaring process is desired
  • Deep understanding of structure – property relationship in polymers is desired
  • Knowledge or experience in REACH/RoHS, CMRT, IPC1754, PROP 65 export control, and trade compliance is desired
