Full-Time, 40+ hrs/wk, Monday-Friday days w/ some evenings

The Children's Counselor provides trauma-informed care, case management and advocacy services for children of program clients; provides support groups and educational services; organizes and implements residential and nonresidential children's activities and events.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  • Provides counseling and case management to assigned children individually or in groups, exercising a considerable degree of professional judgment; in consultation with other staff, participates in development of children service plans; prepares and maintains current records on assigned cases according to program policies and procedures, including intake, treatment plans, progress notes, and other appropriate documentation.
  • Ensures that children receiving services at the YWCA are screened for exposure to abuse and receive education regarding five core education topics as length of stay allows.
  • Maintains familiarity with local school corporation; resolving issues relating to educational progress, behavioral issues, etc.
  • Identifies agency resources for children’s needs; maintains liaison with community agencies; maintains current information on agency resources and intake procedures; supports children during referral intake of community agencies.
  • Facilitates support groups for children exposed to trauma
  • Works closely with the Department of Child Services
  • Serves as a sounding board with children and their problems; suggests alternatives and works with children to obtain problem resolution and increased coping skills
  • Participates in in-service training and regular staff meetings, including case management; attends seminars/training on work-related topics, as suggested.
  • Under supervisor's direction, provides consultation and education services to community agencies, groups and individuals, as appropriate.
  • Assists with facilitating weekly parenting class.
  • Participates in community task forces related to children’s trauma informed care
  • Works with outside volunteer groups providing activities or social opportunities for children.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Experience and Skills:

Education and Experience

Master's degree in Counseling or Social Work; 1-3 years' experience and licensure preferred.

Knowledge and Ability

Demonstrated ability to work with children of all ages and backgrounds; ability to prepare accurate and informative client records, communicate well and function as part of a team; make decisions based on the policies and procedures developed by the YWCA.
