SUMMARY:
The Clinical Dietitian functions to meet the needs of patients in regard to nutrition. He/she answers directly to the Clinical Nutrition Manager. Patient nutritional assessment, MDS, careplans, and tube feedings are the primary responsibilities of the facility Registered Dietician(s). The Regional Dietician and the Dietary Services Coordinator are support for this position.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must have a B.S. from an accredited university, with continuing education and completion of an American Dietetic Association approved program.
  • Must be a Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration, or working on completion of registration exam.
  • Must be licensed as required by the State of Tennessee.
  • Practical experience from an internship in geriatric nutrition and related situations.
  • Must be able to deal with patients, family members, and co-workers with tact and courtesy.
  • Must work with other disciplines to achieve patient standard of care set by facility and company.
  • Must follow prescribed policies and procedures set forth by the Food and Nutrition Department and the facility.
  • Above average written and verbal communication skills a plus.
  • Must be knowledgeable and able to conduct QA/CQI studies and work in inter-disciplinary teams to improve patient care.
  • Must be knowledgeable of state and federal regulatory guidelines for healthcare.
  • Must be able to advise others on proper nutritional care for patients.
  • Ability to advise managers of patient issues/problems as they arise, and/or correct problems in regard to nutritional care.
  • Ability to use a computer and software designed to aid in the patient care process.
  • Customer focused behavior is essential.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Able to stand prolonged periods of time as well as able to sit for long periods of time.
  • Able to focus on tasks that are time or number oriented.
  • Able to carry out fine motor skills and manual dexterity.
  • Mental acuity high enough to adequately perform job requirements.
  • Able to see and hear adequately in order to respond to auditory and visual requests from patients and communicate with co-workers.
  • Able to handle all standard kitchen equipment, lift and carry foodservice supplies, wash dishes/pots pans, and help coordinate tray line activities.
  • Ability to taste and smell foods to determine quality and palatability.
  • No medical problems such as brittle diabetes, uncontrolled seizures, etc., which would endanger self or others.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Work with Clinical Nutrition Manager to achieve company/facility standard of care.
  • Work with nursing and other patient care partners in regard to nutrional care for patients.
  • Works independently and efficiently to achieve tasks of position.
  • Completes continuing education as necessary to maintain Registration status with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Assits in the development of policies and procedures for the clinical nutrition area and patient service area.
  • Visit with patients and patient family members to discuss dietary concerns.
  • Thorough understanding of all state/federal guidelines in regard to clinical nutrition.
  • Maintain communication with nursing and other departments in relation to meeting the standards of patient care set by facility.
  • Participate in QA/CQI studies and inter-disciplinary CQI studies to improve the patient care process.
  • Document, track, and trend patient data necessary to improve the quality of patient care for the facility.
  • Identify patient eating problems and give solutions to solve.
  • Develop and maintain rapport with nursing and medical staff of facility.
  • Present a professional appearance at all times.
  • Write and implement appropriate patient nutritional careplans, progress notes, nutritional assessments, and patient care suggestions within set time guidelines.
  • Attend scheduled meetings and inservices given by department and facility.
  • Participate in careplan meetings as required and scheduled.
  • Work is done accurately and timely.
  • Coordinate audits for trayline to ensure proper temperatures, timelines, accuracy, and patient desires are met. Corrects deviations when they occur.
  • Notify and advise managers and General Manager of pertinent information that can help improve the standard of care for the facility.
  • Function as a registered clinical dietitian for the facility.
  • Conduct inservices for staff as prescribed by the Clinical Nutrition Manager.
  • Perform other duties necessary to achieve patient care.
