A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline.

Primary Function:

AIS is recruiting dredge material inspectors (DMIs) to deploy on vessels transporting dredged material to placement sites in the inner New York Bight and vicinity. AIS is looking for individuals with both DMI and NMFS PSO certifications to observe dredging operations and implement protective measures when necessary. The DMIs will work in teams of 2 during 24-hour offshore operations. Candidates will be selected based on their experience identifying protected species.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Identification of protected species; documenting location, documenting behavior and other essential data; documenting data on logs in an organized manner.
  • Observe transportation and placement of dredged materials to the disposal area
  • Assist vessel; crew to make sure placement occurs in correct location
  • Be competent with AIDSS the Dredged Material Monitoring Software
  • Report violations to USACE-NYD
  • Identify marine animals using the naked eye and visual technology
  • Ability to vigilantly monitor for visual and acoustic detections of marine mammals around observation platform/vessel for up to 12 hours in a 24-hour period.
  • Documenting location, behavior and other essential data
  • Documenting data on logs in an organized manner
  • Operate and maintain field equipment including Garmin GPS, binoculars with reticles, range finder, and high-resolution digital camera with video capabilities.

Compensation: Candidates will be paid an hourly wage to be negotiated and total compensation will vary depending on employee’s experience. Some travel expenses to and from the staging location will be reimbursed. This is a full–time temporary position. For long term placements on AIS projects you will reach the eligibility threshold for the AIS benefits package. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MUST HAVE VALID SAFETY TRAINING
  • Applicants must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19
  • 4-year degree with major in biological sciences
  • Must be certified by a physician as fit for sea duty including:

Ø Not be susceptible to chronic motion sickness

Ø Ability to live in confined quarters

Ø Ability to tolerate stress

Ø Ability to lift objects up to 30 pounds

  • Ability to vigilantly monitor waters surrounding observation platform/vessel for up to 4 hours at a time and not more than 12 hours in a 24-hour period.
  • Must have passed an approved PSO course/training and provide certificate
  • Must have current STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) certificate, or GWO or BOSIET training completed within the last two years.
  • Must have current CPR/ First Aid certification.
  • Must be NMFS approved PSO (must provide NMFS approval letter)
  • Must not be affiliated with any group that may impair the objectivity or the appearance of objectivity
  • Must have proof of eligibility to work within the US

Travel:

  • Some travel to and from the staging location will be reimbursed.

Homeports:

  • New York, New Jersey and Connecticut
