JOB SUMMARY -

The EH&S Specialist researches, assesses the need for, designs and implements Safety, Health, and Environmental programs in the pursuit of a safety culture supported by employees with a strong safety mindset. Works to establish methods and practices that will ensure improvements for regulatory compliance yielding a reduction in the number of lost time injuries, accidents, near misses, illnesses, property damage and general liability losses. Is recognized as the internal consultant and subject matter expert on a wide range of EH&S matters.

JOB DUTIES:
Work with supervisors and managers to implement and update EH&S programs and processes that enable the company to gain a strong safety mindset and minimize the number of work-related injuries.
In partnership with management, investigate near misses, workplace injuries and accidents. Assess and recommend changes to processes, operating procedures and or equipment to reduce or eliminate risks of hazards in the workplace.
Educate supervisors and managers on how to prepare accidents, incident and near miss reports. Ensure an understanding of the regulations and compliance requirements as well as the benefits to the company as it reduces and eliminates risks and creates a healthier work environment. Provide guidance to supervisors and managers on how they can conduct their regular safety walk throughs using Smartsheets or other tools.
Gather, analyze, evaluate, and then present EH&S data to management and or Global Safety Teams - inclusive of statistics of incidents to provide consultation and recommendations for a safer work environment and or minimize environmental risks and ensure regulatory compliance.
Support the implementation of safety programs inclusive of assisting supervisors and managers with safety meetings.
For injured employees, assist in their return-to-work and ensure restricted duties are managed with supervisors/managers so that those duties do not exacerbate an injury or illness.
Assist in educating senior leadership of incident trends and corrective actions.
Communicate safety concerns, new policies, and changes to existing policies to all employees and management in a timely manner.
Conduct safety training for all employees including new hires, existing employees, contract staff, to ensure their awareness and knowledge of the company's safety policies and procedures. Training will be conducted using LMS, Master Control, while some will require classroom or hands-on training.
Conduct regular and requested inspections at the various NH facilities to ensure site compliance with company as well as state/local statutes and federal regulations. Inspections may include other North American sites.
Comply with the mandated reporting requirements for accidents, annual reports, and other regulatory reporting. Maintain and keep organized all regulatory records. Assist in preparation, maintenance, and reporting required for OSHA forms for work-related injuries and illnesses.
Accurately edit and or prepare safety sections or documents for use in material control procedures (SPECs) and batch records to support manufacturing operations at NH sites.
Coordinate and conduct "new product / compound introduction" assessments, ensuring timely completion and recordkeeping.
Prepare first draft response in relation to any environmental, health or safety incident.
Assist in client or regulatory agencies inspections or audits at various facilities.
Prepare hazard communication, personal protective equipment, spill management and waste disposal guidance for use in manufacturing and quality control documents.
Perform industrial hygiene workplace assessments of the workplaces for ergonomic and health concerns using appropriate techniques and testing equipment. Must be proficient in interpreting testing results and report preparation, including recommendations and follow-through on corrective actions.
Perform inspection of hazardous waste storage areas, prepare hazardous waste manifests and bills-of-lading for regulated waste shipments. Ensure waste manifests and bills-of-lading are submitted to required agency(ies) in a timely manner, maintaining these and associated documents - such as waste profiles -organized and ready for inspection or audit as necessary.
Assist in preparing applications for Aboveground Storage Tanks as necessary, air emission permits, and or industrial discharge permits. Monitor these for ongoing regulatory compliance.

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS:
Exceptional written and verbal skills.
Able to perform duties with moderate to minimal oversight, and ability to discern when review by management is advisable or necessary.
Proven experience in preparing and delivering compelling presentations to all levels within the company.
Demonstrated experience in bringing about safety improvements and developing strong safety cultures.
Strong computer skills inclusive of MS Word, Excel, Power Point, One Note and Outlook.
Able to build rapport and strong work relationships with employees and management.
Keeps current on safety and environmental regulations.
EXPERIENCE:
Possess a thorough working knowledge of workplace safety regulations as well as a solid working knowledge of hazardous waste regulations (state and Federal)
Development and chairing or coordination of an effective safety committee
Demonstrated success in implementation of safety standards, compliance with safety regulations, and promotion of safe working environment
Preparation, development, implementation, and maintenance of lockout / tagout program, its procedures, associated training, and periodic audits. Experience with development and implementation of Electrical Safety Program is preferred, advantageous.
Preparation, development, implementation and maintenance of: respiratory protection program to include oversight of medical surveillance; bloodborne pathogens program to include medical surveillance and oversight of preventive medical care; and, preparation, development, implementation of an effective hazard communication program so that employees in various groups understand potential workplace hazards, required personal protective equipment, and basic spill response.
Preparation, development, and implementation of an industrial hygiene program that assesses workplaces for potential occupational health hazards to include air/noise/heat and other workplace testing, reporting, and recordkeeping.
Implementation of EH&S programs in a life science or biopharmaceutical facility is preferred but not required
EDUCATION:
BS degree in Occupational Safety or related field such as Environmental Science, plus 5 to 7 years of EH&S work experience
Certified in State of NH as a hazardous waste coordinator or the ability to attain that certification within 3-months of hire.
Have certification as an Industrial Hygienist or Safety Professional, or ability to attain that certification within 2-years of hire.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & MENTAL DEMANDS:
Able to stand and walk for long and extended periods of time during the day greater than 75%
Frequently sitting and working at a computer 25-50%
Occasionally required to stoop, bend, kneel or climb less than 20%
Must be able to travel, drive between facilities (25-50%), air travel less than 20%

COMMUNICATIONS & CONTACTS:
Requires regular communication and contact with co-workers, including supervisors, managers, and occasionally senior management / Leadership as directed
Requires periodic communication with local, state, and Federal regulatory personnel including Department of Labor, Department of Environmental Services, Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and insurance / claims adjusters.
MANAGERIAL & SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
May at times provide guidance and training of EH&S Technician position (less than 20%).
As directed, assist with EH&S role in "new product / compound introduction" meetings with Material Safety Review Committee.
TRAVEL:
Requires travel between NH facilities on a frequent basis, conducting site audits / inspections, safety training (~35% of time per week).
May also require travel to other LSNE facilities for assistance in new facility integration, conducting site audits / inspections, program development, conducting safety training, and other duties as assigned (perhaps several times in a year).
