The Lansing Board of Water & Light has an opening for a Water and Steam Engineer in our Water & Steam Distribution Department located in Lansing, MI.

Job Type: Full-Time
Starting Salary Range: $62,100 - $74,000

Position Summary:

Responsible for all aspects of the design and installation of water, steam, and chilled water distribution projects. Projects may be initiated by the BWL, or by customer request. The scope of projects may range from meter changes to the installation of new large diameter mains.
Essential Functions:
  • Performs engineering and technical design for new and modified water, steam, and chilled water distribution system projects.
  • Supports programmed water, steam, and chilled water distribution system maintenance.
  • Customer intake and project initiation: Communicates BWL requirements to customers, and coordinates with customer’s project team in all aspects of the work.
  • Develops plans and/or performs plan review and approval to ensure proposed design meets the requirements of the BWL and EGLE, including the modeling of water systems to meet proposed design. Responsible for submitting water distribution project plans to the EGLE for permitting.
  • Prepares specifications, contracts, evaluation of bids, and contract administration. Manages contractor work, and purchases materials as required.
  • Coordinates with other BWL Departments (e.g., Property Management, Accounting, Purchasing and Warehousing, etc.), and other entities impacted by the BWL’s work (e.g., Consumers Energy, City of Lansing Public Service, MDOT), and governmental agencies (e.g., City of Lansing, the State of Michigan) as required to complete the project, including obtaining permits.
  • For Customer initiated work: Administers service agreements with the customer and contractors as required, including collecting payment and bonds, reviewing material submittals, project cost tracking and reporting, and reconciliation upon completion. Utilizes approved methods for tracking and managing work.
  • Manages own projects including schedule projections, planning of projects, engineering, estimating, monitoring, reconciliation, deadlines/ timeframes, and other duties related to project management.
  • Assists in the development of procedures and design standards for water, steam, and chilled water distribution systems.
  • Writes documents, reports, and conducts oral presentations.
  • Required to follow BWL Safety Manual and wear personal protective equipment for all field work.
  • Attends training and safety awareness and/or skills improvement as required by the BWL or government agency such as MIOSHA.
  • Participation in the continuous improvement of the Asset Management System and Work Management processes.
  • Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
  • Reliable and predictable attendance.
  • Other duties assigned by management.
Job Specifications:
Required:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited school, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in the engineering field.
  • Must obtain a Michigan S-4 license within two years from hire.
  • Thorough knowledge of fundamental engineering/economic principles and concepts.
  • Able to make intermediate level decisions independently and seek out assistance from higher level engineers for decisions they do not have the expertise yet developed.
  • Assigns tasks to and coordinates work with entry-level engineers, technicians, or administrative staff.
  • Independently conduct project engineering meetings and relay information to all members of the project team.
  • Assist in determining schedule and budget requirements.
  • Evaluate, select, apply standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform a task or sequence of tasks for conventional design/planning/analysis projects with few complex features.
  • Experience with creating design documents including drawings and specifications.
  • Collaboratively use judgement to determine adaptations in methods for non-routine aspects of assignments.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills and intermediate troubleshooting skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Prepares portions of or entire technical documents, depending on complexity.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and ESRI.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Teams, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, and PowerPoint.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
Preferred:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Environmental or Mechanical Engineering experience in the design, construction, project management and maintenance of heavy construction projects.
  • 4 years’ experience in design, construction and project management of water, steam, or chilled systems.
    • Experience using the following software:
    • Hydraulic modeling software (InfoWater).
    • Customer information system (UMAX).
    • Financial system (SAP) & (iPayable).

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for the majority of the working day. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office environment including the use of stairs. Constantly operates a computer, and other office equipment. Ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen. Must communicate frequently with other departments and employees both verbally and in writing. May need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and/or position the body to reach items on the floor/below knee level or reach overhead. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about in industrial environments, and uneven terrain. May be required to recognize small numbers, letters, symbols, colors on prints, and/or operate field instruments/equipment.

Works in temperature-controlled office environment, with occasional work in outdoor weather conditions, and in industrial environments.
