Nestled in 1,000 acres of rolling hills in Dutchess County, New York, Wethersfield Estate & Garden is generally considered to be one of the finest examples of Italian Renaissance gardens in the United States. Founded in 1938, Wethersfield Estate & Garden is a non-profit organization devoted to the proper stewardship of land, habitat protection, conservation, culture, and the arts. Wethersfield hosts a diversity of formal and native-inspired garden spaces, and 20 miles of trails for equestrian activities and hiking. We strive to use the latest horticultural knowledge to develop a lasting garden in a changing world. Wethersfield Estate & Garden is on the National Register of Historic Places, and recently won the 2021 New York State Historic Preservation Award for Excellence in Historic Landscape Preservation.

The Estate Gardener reports to the Estate Manager. The Estate Gardener assists in the maintenance of the formal Garden, as well as the Estate infrastructure. The ideal candidate serves as part of a team in which all employees work collaboratively, focusing on the shared maintenance of the formal gardens, woodland gardens, trails, and overall estate infrastructure. This is an hourly, 40 hour a week job. Tasks are seasonal. Availability for occasional evenings, and special events is required.

Duties:

Garden: Assistance in planning, planting, and maintaining, plantings within the formal gardens, work within the attached Woodland Garden (Bosco), assistance in greenhouse maintenance. Tasks include planting, weeding, hedge trimming.

Estate/Trails/Orchard: Assistance in maintaining trails for equestrian use and other recreational sports, such as hiking. Tasks include brush cutting, splitting wood etc.

Assistance in Maintenance of Equipment/Machines: Assistance in maintaining estate infrastructure. Minor electrical, carpentry and other work, as necessary. (Necessary training provided.)

Education and Experience: The qualified applicant can move items of up to 60 pounds and enjoys working outside in all weather. The applicant is curious and demonstrates an eagerness to execute team-based solutions. Strong and positive communication skills are necessary. A valid driver’s license is required.
