Be the guiding hand for one of Lorain County’s largest food pantries, and a lifeline to residents in the rural southern half of the county!

The food programs coordinator creates inclusive spaces and ensures a variety of options so that everyone in southern Lorain County has access to ample, nutritious food. They must have a passion to help vulnerable populations and be attentive to every detail as they are responsible for acquiring, organizing, and distributing hundreds of thousands of pounds of food each year.

The ideal candidate is a team player and leader who strives to do their best while inspiring others to excel. They must be adaptable in the face of ever-changing needs, as we’ve learned during the national crisis of the last three years.

The food programs coordinator is the coordinating figure for a larger food team, comprising several staff members involved in direct service food programs, sustainability efforts, and outreach to the community. They are responsible for all food sourcing and for the direct oversight of all OCS’ on-site direct service programs, as well as for collaborating with community partners on collective initiatives and new OCS programs. The FPC will also be directly responsible for transitioning food programs operations to OCS’ new facility beginning in Fall 2023. The food programs coordinator is a central part of the wider OCS team, which values empathy, creativity, and a can-do attitude in serving our community.

The Food Programs Coordinator:

  • Serves as a compassionate resource to people in need who are seeking food and other forms of relief.
  • Manages a team of staff members involved in food sourcing, sustainability efforts, and outreach to the community.
  • Collaborates with OCS and external partners on joint efforts, new programs, and growing existing programs such as food rescue and sustainability programs.
  • Has a can-do attitude, effective time management skills, the ability to carry out tasks independently, and can communicate with others effectively.
  • Cultivates and maintains positive relationships with potential and current partners and stakeholders.
  • Maintains an inventory of food through partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio, donors, and outside purchases.
  • Maintains and improves quality of food offered through OCS’ pantry and other programs, including working with local farms, food hubs, wholesalers, and hatcheries to diversify food sources.
  • Oversees all OCS food distributions, including holiday distributions.
  • Trains and collaborates to supervise support labor, including volunteers, interns, and work-study students.
  • Ensures that staff, interns, and volunteers maintain a clean, safe warehouse, including rotating stock, maintaining appliances and tools, and maintaining proper food safety at all times.
  • Oversees the food programs budget, including for fiscal agent/partner organization programs such as Oberlin and Wellington Backpack programs.
  • Joins in a network to promote food justice in southern Lorain County and Lorain County as a whole.
  • Thinks creatively to make OCS’ food programs adaptable and responsive to changing needs.
  • Creates food-related educational and workshop opportunities for clients.
  • Completes ongoing reporting, including monthly internal and Second Harvest statistics, bi-monthly board reports, and grant statistics and text as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the executive director.

Required:

  • Passion for service.

  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to write and speak effectively.
  • Willingness to predict problems, issues, and opportunities and devise solutions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • Willingness to learn and grow.

Preferred:

  • College degree or equivalent.
  • Spanish proficiency
  • 2 years of experience (or equivalent) in a nonprofit organization.

Oberlin Community Services is a community organization that empowers local residents through emergency assistance, food programs, and other services while promoting systemic change. The food programs coordinator is an essential figure in executing this mission and responsible for ensuring the success of all elements of all food programs.

This position is full-time on-site, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday with occasional additional hours. Benefits include paid holidays, vacation and personal time, generous medical benefits, and retirement.
