Job Title: Aquatic Instructor

Department: Recreation

Reports To: Assistant Aquatics Coordinator and Aquatics Coordinator

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

JOB SUMMARY

Under general direction of the Assistant Aquatics Coordinator and Aquatics/Facility Coordinator, facilitates aquatic classes (including but not limited to Swim lessons, Private Swim Lessons, Aquatic Exercise classes, Lifeguarding, CPR/First Aid/AED courses, etc.)

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is a part-time exempt classification level. Incumbent is expected to learn technical and specialized rules, regulations, and activities related to the Aquatics Department, and already possess the necessary skills and knowledge needed for each course taught. Regular use of independent judgment and initiative is required. Unique skills and certifications are required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Must possess and maintain valid certifications needed to perform each aquatic program.

Demonstrate favorable instruction qualities including:

  • Positive, effective and compassionate communication skills.
  • Patient and adaptive instructional styles
  • Previous water safety experience (preferred)

Aquatic Program Instructor Responsibilities:

  • Instructors for aquatic program at Brecksville Community Center are to conduct themselves in a professional demeanor. When an instructor is conducting a class, they assume responsibility for the participants’ safety as well as the quality of instruction. The following are guidelines listed in order of priority instructors should follow. Further duty clarifications are listed under each general category.

Ensure the safety and wellbeing of participants.

  • Always consider the participants' safety foremost.
  • Ensure activities are well-planned and appropriate for specific skill levels.
  • Ensure at least one lifeguard is on duty and appropriate safety equipment is present.
  • Ensure class area is free of debris and unneeded equipment.
  • Ensure classes are conducted in appropriate water depths for the skill levels being instructed.
  • Observe proper depths and pool space for diving activities. Diving instruction is restricted to 9-ft. depths and greater. Open fulcrum activities on the diving board are limited to instructional dives of higher levels where proper approaches have already been instructed. Use of the diving board such as this must be approved by the Aquatic Coordinator.

Provide a fun and effective environment for the participants.

  • Effectively plan and adjust class sessions. Goals and objectives are to be developed for all classes.
  • Ensure participants’ skill levels are suitable to the class in which they are enrolled. Do not greatly under or over challenge participants. Adjustments in class material or participants are to be made according to the specific program guidelines.
  • Remain focused on participants' abilities and needs. Modify teaching approaches to meet the needs of participants.
  • Refrain from giving any one participant or group of participants too much attention.
  • Plan effective class organization patterns. Be flexible to change group organization to allow each participant an unobstructed view of instruction and a maximum amount of area for participation.
  • Ensure aides or co-instructors are effective and efficient in their assistance.
  • Use appropriate vocabulary for each of your classes.
  • Refrain from over-socializing with co-workers during a program.
  • Promote a positive class environment. Discourage any ridiculing or criticism within or between classes. Encourage participants with positive and corrective feedback. Refrain from using any type of negative feedback. It is important to the success of the program to recognize what participants are doing properly as much as what they are doing improperly.
  • Plan alternate activities in the event of foul weather.
  • Recognize and be sensitive to ethnic diversities. Do not allow or make ethnic slurs or inappropriate language of any sort.
  • Plan classes to include all materials described in course outlines.
  • Ensure participants meet the requirements of each class (if applicable) before advancing participants to a higher level.
  • Provide frequent example demonstrations for each skill being taught. If an instructor cannot provide an accurate demonstration, coordinate another staff member that can.

Ensure appropriate instructor administrative duties.

  • Complete and submit session block plans prior to the class start date.
  • Attend pre and post program meetings.
  • Complete and submit course record forms to the Assistant Aquatic Coordinator.
  • Complete and distribute certificate and participation cards.
  • Prepare all equipment before each class and put away the equipment in their appropriate places.
  • Administer and score any written or practical tests given.
  • Be familiar with all American Red Cross related materials.
  • Notify and confirm any special needs for classes with the Aquatics Coordinator and/or the Assistant Aquatic Coordinator.
  • Make timely and qualified substitution arrangements when needed. Complete and submit a Schedule Change Authorization Form to either the Aquatic Coordinator or Assistant Aquatic Coordinator.

Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of the content and objectives of youth and adult aquatic and safety programs. Demonstration of good public relations skills as well as ability to establish effective working relationships with the public and other personnel. Demonstration educational and effective facilitation skills. Refraining from any discrimination, unfair or special treatment towards all program participants.

All instructors are required and expected to work as an effective and efficient team with all other employees, and maintain a welcoming and professional work environment; regardless of age, gender, race, ethnic background, personal ideologies, beliefs, or opinions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Conditions include occasional bending, reaching, walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time where employees are exposed to excessive noise, sun and wind during operation of outdoor pool, frequent climbing, kneeling, stooping, and bending; moderate mental effort required. General manual dexterity. Occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. Some work is performed under the hazardous conditions of toxic chemicals. Instructors must be able to effectively demonstrate and perform all physical and academic requirements of the instructional program they facilitate.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is generally 80% indoors and 20% outdoors in various weather conditions. The noise level is usually moderate, and the employee is subject to high levels of public contact and frequent interruptions. While performing duties of this job, the employee works near swimming pools and various types of recreation equipment and is occasionally exposed to the risk of slipping and falling. The employee also risks physical hazards from mechanical and electrical equipment, exposure to pool chemicals, working in and around chemicals and hazardous gases. Due to the close proximity and interaction between employees, patrons, and program participants; employees are expected to the best of their ability to minimize the risk of introducing unhealthy and or harmful pathogens to the workplace.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Experience in a recreation preferred. Must possess valid certifications from the American Red Cross. This position is open to ages over 16 with a work permit from school. Individuals must be able to perform job responsibilities.
