Alta Forest Products is the world's largest producer of wood fence boards, specializing in Western Red Cedar and other premium species found in the Pacific and Inland Northwest forests. In addition to producing fence boards and pallet stock lumber, Alta's zero-wood-waste sawmills produce by-products such as wood chips, sawdust, mulch, and bio-fuel.

Headquartered in centrally-located Chehalis, Washington, Alta operates fence board sawmills in four other rural communities in the region: Morton, WA; Shelton, WA; Amanda Park, WA; and Naples, ID.

The Role:

As a Production Supervisor, your role will be to supervise and coordinate the activities of workers engaged in operating various machines to manufacture fencing. You will carry out these supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

The individual in this position will report to the Mill Manager and be responsible for several specific tasks, including those outlined below.

Responsibilities:

  • Training crew in policies, procedures, and safety.
  • Ensures mill meets priority production goals.
  • Supervises production crew, checking in with each member regularly to ensure they are aware of production goals and performing their duties safely and efficiently.
  • Helps identify and plan modifications that will improve the efficiency and safety of the mill.
  • Interfaces with others in the organization to ensure customer deadlines are met.
  • Inspects products to ensure proper quality is maintained.
  • Sees that Job Safety Analyses are reviewed regularly with employees.
  • Manages employees’ time, vacation, sick leave, etc., ensuring that each position is filled and the mill can safely operate.
  • Attends designated meetings such as maintenance, mill leadership, and safety committee meetings.
  • Evaluates production employees’ job performance and maintain a written record of employee interactions.
  • Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving work problems.
  • Analyzes data/trends to determine opportunities for improvement and/or to communicate performance to employees.
  • Identifies safety hazards and submits work orders.
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of employees, including production personnel, mill management, and senior leaders.
  • Related experience and/or training required.

  • Ability to react well under pressure, work autonomously, and prioritize and plan work activities.

  • Ability to interpret various written, oral, and diagram instructions.
  • Knowledge and comfortable using computer-based systems, word processing, spreadsheet, and payroll system experience is a plus.

Work Environment

This role will operate in professional offices, log yards, and sawmill sites. While performing the duties of this job, employees will be regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, outdoor weather conditions, working at heights, and around airborne particulates and chemicals in a loud environment.


Position Type/Travel/Schedule

This is a full-time position; Occasional Fridays or weekend and overtime work may be required as projects or job duties demand.

Days of work will be Monday through Thursday - Evening Swingshift.

  • This position requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, kneeling, and stooping for extended lengths of time.

  • Pay: $68,000 - $101,000 per year - actual starting wage will depend on experience or qualifications
