Organizational Overview


The Facilities & Operations (F&O) Directorate's mission is to enable great science. The Guest Services Division provides services that support and assist the world-class scientific research performed at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Guest services are available to all Brookhaven Divisions, Departments, guests, users, and visiting researchers.

Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Facilities & Operations (F&O) Directorate seeks a Quality of Life/Brookhaven Employees’ Recreation Association/Recreation (QOL/BERA/Recreation) Supervisor. This position reports to the Manager of the Guest Services Division.

Position Description


Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for creating and executing programs and activities relating to Quality of Life, BERA, and Recreation.
  • Serve as point of contact for employees, visitors, users, guests, families, and on-site residents for all QOL and Recreational activities.
  • Arrange or aid in organizing social/recreational-type activities. This includes arranging and/or providing assistance with organizing transportation and trips to New York City, Broadway Shows, baseball games, interesting shopping excursions, cultural excursions, etc.
  • Organize activities such as: Holiday Egg Hunt, Children’s Holiday Party, Virtual programs, evening activities, etc.
  • Foster and maintain a liaison to over 40 BERA Activity Chairpersons, and the BERA Executive Board.
  • Organize and prepare Special Programs such as a Summer Camp Program, Swim Lessons, Lifeguard training, Adult Swim Programs, Wellness Program, etc.
  • Manage the onsite and online BERA store. Assist departments with special logo purchases.
  • Oversee and maintain the facilities within the program including the Gym, Pool, Tennis Courts, Softball Fields, and Rec Hall.
  • Responsible for the Borrow-A-Bike and Bike Share programs on campus.
  • Oversee the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Association of Students and Postdocs (ASAP) programs.
  • Prepare budgets, financial reports, maintain and monitor inventory, and oversee multiple revenue streams that include operational, BSA, and non-profit accounts.
  • Provides leadership, management, and supervision to three (3) direct reports, seasonal, and part-time employees centered on operational excellence that supports safe, efficient, and secure operations.
  • Weekly Day-One Orientation presentation.
  • Liaison for Brookhaven Retired Employees Association.
  • Develop said support services and programs according to customer needs, Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) requirements, BNL management decisions, available resources, government regulations, and the Department of Energy (DOE)/BNL Prime Contract.
  • Assist in the development of overall business strategies for the self-sustaining, revenue-generating support service activities to ensure on-going fiscal sustainability of areas of responsibility.
  • Ensure safe, effective, and ES&H compliant operations, with a focus on prevention, protection, and conservation of resources.
  • Develop, implement, and administer effective communications plans and programs.
  • Foster a culture of service excellence and continuous improvement with a focus on customer service, efficiency, respectful workplace policy, and quality.
  • Hire, develop, evaluate, and retain highly qualified staff.
  • Maintain awareness of environmental impact of work and apply pollution prevention and waste minimization techniques.
  • Identify potential hazards, environmental concerns, and unsafe conditions or practices in work or at work sites and implement or suggest controls to minimize risk.

Position Requirements


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Hospitality Management, Recreation Management, or a departmentally related field or equivalent experience 2:1 (experience: college) years.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ relevant work experience.
  • The ability to direct exempt, non-exempt, and bargaining unit staff.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Proven ability to work in collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • Experience leading and managing teams/workgroups.
  • Able to work effectively under pressure, meeting deadlines and balancing multiple priorities.
  • Must be highly organized and detail orientated.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse and inclusive community.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment with advanced problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Discretion in handling confidential and/or highly sensitive matters.
  • Experience in budget development and management.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work flexible hours that will occasionally include nights and weekends.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Relevant higher education and/or certifications.
  • Experience with event planning and/or hospitality background
  • Retail experience/marketing experience.
  • Experience with camp programming and/or athletic programming.
  • Experience with project management.
