Software Engineer Manager

KBR has a need for an energetic and dynamic Software Engineering Manager to join its talented team in Sioux Falls, SD. KBR is the primary contractor to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for performing work at the Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (http://eros.usgs.gov/) near Sioux Falls, SD. This position will be part of a multidisciplinary staff, focusing on planning, development, and integration of the data management, processing, archiving, and distribution capabilities of remote-sensed data from the location at EROS and in the cloud.

The Software Engineering Manager will lead a team of software engineers and support them with systems engineering activities for the USGS Landsat Data Processing and Archive System. The candidate will follow a Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) to support the team through a waterfall systems engineering lifecycle. The candidate will use technical experience to perform trade studies, create system requirements, document the design, support formal testing, present milestone reviews, and recommend appropriate solutions and alternatives. They will use specialized knowledge or skills to solve complex and unique problems and direct the daily activities of a development team. This includes establishing priorities, using judgment to interpret internal and external issues, and developing best practices. The candidate must have strong communication skills and be able to translate information to different audience types.

Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, MIS, Engineering, or equivalent

Experience: At least 4 years

Required Skills:

  • Strong verbal communication and writing skills
  • Ability to work with and lead a technical team
  • Responsible for planning and managing scope, schedule, and budget
  • Explain technical details and issues clearly to non-technical individuals and be able to explain system concepts and problems clearly and concisely
  • Lead and interface effectively with other engineering staff of a multi-disciplined team, including strong interpersonal and team skills
  • Prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Experience with the full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
  • Conduct systems engineering activities in accordance with the Landsat Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) including preparing operations concepts, developing requirements, defining and documenting interface definitions, conducting architecture and trade study analysis, presenting milestone reviews to the customer, executing formal testing, and transitioning to operations

Desired Skills:

  • Ability to conduct trade studies for technology upgrades, hardware options, and software
  • Experience working with or architecting Cloud solutions
  • Experience in image processing, data archiving systems, database management and design, software development, etc.
  • Experience using DOORS, Jira, and Confluence

The candidate must have previous 3 years of US residency.

The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain a badge for facility access and user accounts.
