  • Bannack State Park is situated in a beautiful canyon along the banks of Grasshopper Creek
  • Located 25 miles from Dillon, Montana in the southwestern corner of the state
  • Dillon is the service center for the region with about 5000 residents, the University of Montana Western, public schools, hospital, grocery stores, and a variety of other services
  • Recreational Opportunities abound: Fly Fishing is a major attraction

Job Duties:

The duties of the Recreation Technician are approximately 50% customer service and 50% maintenance. The position will operate the visitor center which requires strong customer service skills, the ability to operate a computer-based cash register, assist with the campground reservation system, assist with interpretive/educational programs, work special events, patrol park grounds to encourage rule compliance and identify potential hazards or maintenance needs. Maintenance duties will include groundskeeping, janitorial services, minor repairs and other duties as assigned.

Physical and Environmental Demands:


  • Work is performed in both an indoor and outdoor environment.
  • Frequently works in adverse outdoor conditions including temperature extremes, snow and rain, dust, and mosquito infested areas.
  • Works with public and may inform public of site rules and regulations.
  • The position may require some travel. The incumbent will be required to work odd hours, weekends, and holidays.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with natural and cultural resource management including historical and current issues. Must develop a working knowledge, including site location and available recreational opportunities for public recreational sites in the region’s jurisdiction. These include wildlife management areas, fishing access sites, state parks, forested lands, and major waterways.
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions, and the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to establish positive working relationships with co-workers and the public.
  • Must be comfortable communicating with dissatisfied visitors and helping to deescalate the situation.

  • Must have basic computer skills: email, word processing, internet use, spreadsheet development.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or equivalent education. One year of college or vocational training experience in park and recreation management, interpretive visitor center, or closely related setting is preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required at time of application: General knowledge of basic customer service and safe work habits.

Ability to: educate and inform visitors on compliance with rules and regulations and State laws; collect fees and make change; sell merchandise and account for monies collected; read, maintain, and prepare records and reports; and assist visitors in emergency situations. Daily interaction with site visitors requires effective communication and public relations skills.
