About Jerritt Canyon

First Majestic acquired the Jerritt Canyon Gold Mine from Sprott Mining Inc. on April 30, 2021. The Jerritt Canyon property contains 30,821 hectares of mining claims located in the mining friendly state of Nevada. The Jerritt Canyon deposit was discovered in 1972 and first gold production from the property occurred in 1981.

The Jerritt Canyon Gold District is located in Elko County, northeastern Nevada. The Carlin-type gold mineralization at Jerritt Canyon is hosted by silty carbonate or carbonaceous siliciclastic rocks originally deposited as shelf sedimentary rocks during the Paleozoic Era.

The Opportunity

The Underground Surveyor is responsible for providing a high level of accurate surveying to the underground mining group and other teams through leading, training, and developing the underground survey team; performing survey projects as directed; and perform other duties as assigned. The Underground Surveyor Department is responsible for providing survey support to mine operations and other groups as required. This role will require an individual who is safety driven and safety conscious. The incumbent will work in close collaboration with team members as well as employees from other departments. The role will be involved in the accurate measurement and recording of the progression of mine workings and development headings, and ensuring the recorded information is translated onto mining plans in a clear and timely manner. The Underground Surveyor Department is accountable for supporting the underground operations team by planning and providing operations with direction and prints for all active headings. In this role, planning includes communicating with operations on a daily basis to ensure all prints are being issued and headings being visited on a regular basis. The incumbent is expected to keep updated with the needs of the working areas and the changes to weekly and monthly plans The Underground Surveyor Department will organize information and resources to meet requirements for monthly plans to be achieved as well as be aware of the overall mine targets and contribute to meeting those targets.

Responsibilities

  • Perform underground surveying, including but not limited to:
    • Support operations through consistent and timely performance of the daily activities pertaining to the survey function, including the layout and maintenance of survey reference marks
    • Ensure the regular review of mine survey processes and investigate, assess, and where appropriate, trial new methods or technology
    • Ensure the proper use, maintenance, and calibration of survey equipment
    • Reconcile weekly and monthly survey measures.
    • The survey function is also be expected to work cross-functionally with operations and technical services to maintain visual aids to help communicate the short term mine plan and designs, through maintaining the various Deswik layers
    • Long hole stope ring layout
    • Maintain up-to-date survey records
    • Issue survey prints to relevant stakeholders
    • Issue cavity surveys to Engineering in a timely manner
    • Carry out bore hole surveying for deviation analysis
    • Establish lasers and issue cut sheets for development headings
    • Layout drill holes for exploration drilling.
    • Hole collar pick-up and breakthrough surveys of long-hole production drilling activities to assist drill and blast technicians with stope blast design and timing
    • Conduct surveys to obtain data used in planning mining operations
    • Complete regular CMS surveys of the production stopes in various stages of the stope cycle in order to monitor production status
    • Underground surveying using resection techniques
    • Daily mining advance surveys and survey control establishment
    • Assist in preparation of mine maps for miners and engineering
    • Draft maps, drawings and create a database of survey data including development layouts, production drill mark-ups, and miscellaneous layouts
  • Ensure all information is transferred onto the appropriate mining plans and are made available to the end user(s) in a timely and accurate manner
  • Produce a semi-monthly reconciliation of the mine-wide development meters and associated volume excavated from the underground workings, attributing each reconciled meter as either an operating or capital expenditure
  • Develop and contribute to the development of standardized and best practice work procedures of surveying activities
  • The incumbent may also be asked to perform surface survey work, including surface stockpile, waste dump or tailings storage facility maps

Education and Experience

  • Strong knowledge of surveying principles in underground mining, engineering construction, with surface experience preferred
  • Minimum of eight (8) years extensive surveying work experience, preferably in an underground mining environment preferred
  • Strong knowledge and proven use of current survey software and hardware required
  • Well-developed problem-solving skills, with the ability to find solutions with a team or independently preferred
  • Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills required
  • Strong math and computer skills required Previous supervisory experience preferred
  • Ability to walk on uneven ground in all weather conditions required
  • Ability to perform all essential functions of this position required
  • Formal recognition of underground surveying expertise required
  • A Survey Engineering Technician, Mining Engineering Technician, or Mining Engineering Technologist Diploma preferred
  • At least three years' experience of surveying in a production underground mining environment preferred
  • Expertise with survey equipment (total station, CMS, base station, rover)
  • Knowledge and experience with Deswik planning software would be highly desired (also Minesight, Vulcan and Leica)
  • Demonstrated proficiency with AutoCAD and other digital Land Survey, graphic workstations, plotters, digitizers
