Head Communications US; President, BI Cares Foundation
  • Lead the Communications function in the US and ensure an interface between the corporate teams in Corporate Affairs and the US.
  • Serve as President of the BI Cares Foundation to ensure effective and efficient implementation of the “Patient Assistance Program” which provides free product to more than 50,000 patients in the US and provides product donations to more than 77 countries. This role also oversees the creation of a 5-year strategy that is approved by the BI Cares Board which includes the US CMD and others.
  • Develop, protect and promote Boehringer Ingelheim's corporate profile, brand and reputation with internal and external stakeholders and experts to ensure they are fully informed about the businesses, its activities, products and services, and see BI as a partner of choice.
  • Set the vision, developing strategy and overseeing the successful implementation of initiatives and programs for the US Boehringer Ingelheim enterprise across a number of disciplines, including Internal and External Communications, Executive Communications, Product Public Relations, Digital & Social Media, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and the BI Cares Foundation.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders (including employees, other enabling functions, leaders, media, HCPs and customers).
  • Create and advance, the implementation of the US Narrative and Strategic Message across all business units, with input from senior leadership across all businesses, to provide clarity of the US business strategy to all US employees.
  • Oversee the integration of communications activities across the Human Pharma, Animal Health and Biopharma business units in the US ensuring seamless operations between communications and marketing functions in support of BI’s product portfolio.
  • The Head of Communications US is an active member of the corporate division’s Extended Corporate Affairs Leadership Team and together with their corporate and R/OPU counterparts plays an active role in developing campaigns, developing people, and aligning on strategic topics and priorities in order to secure tactical and operational alignment across Corporate Affairs globally. Furthermore, this individual serves as a strategic adviser to the US leadership team providing counsel as it relates to communications strategy development, crisis response, and organizational change initiatives.

Minimum Education/Degree Requirements: Bachelor’s degree required and Master’s Degree preferred

Required Capabilities:
  • 15+ years’ experience in internal communications, public relations, corporate communications, patient advocacy and professional relations.
  • Experience gaining alignment on communications strategy with key internal stakeholders and driving execution.
  • Ten years management experience with track record of growing and developing teams of at least 10-20 employees; Robust experience at driving communications at a large global company preferred.
  • Firm grasp on external environment and customer expectations, how this impacts the business and how to deliver innovative solutions and strategies for the business.
  • Five or more years in the pharmaceutical industry or healthcare; Five or more years working in a corporate environment.
  • Proven track record as Communications or Marketing Strategist.
  • Proven ability to build relationships and influence key internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to strategically manage internal and external resources holistically for effective and efficient delivery of functional work and across categories within span of control.
  • Strong analytical abilities; crisis/issue management leadership; ability to maintain composure at all times and establish trust as the “voice of reason” for the organization.
  • A nuanced interpersonal style and exceptional verbal communication skills.
  • Possesses in-depth knowledge of corporate internal and external communications, media relations, CSR, patient advocacy, government affairs and pharmaceutical marketing and the ability to link that knowledge to impacting business objectives.
  • Firm grasp on external environment and customer expectations, how this impacts the business and knows how to deliver innovative solutions and strategies for the business
  • Able to make a compelling case for communications and CSR, and to engender support for programming, decisions and resources.
  • A mature demeanor and an ability to interface credibly at an elevated level with senior US and global leaders; proven track record as counselor to senior executives and CEOs; works effectively with leaders to lead and drive strategic initiatives.
  • Builds relationships with key stakeholders and influence outcomes both with and without authority; collaborates with external partners (alliance partners, NGOs, etc.) and lead and influence in ambiguous situations.
  • Strategic and innovative thinker and a champion for change; is creative, innovative and flexible; not simply following the BI playbook.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and enjoy a fast-paced, often unpredictable environment
  • Leadership, coaching, and management capabilities; and the highest level of professional and ethical standards.
