The Bureau of Information & Telecommunications (BIT) strives to partner and collaborate with clients in support of their missions through innovative information technology consulting, systems, and solutions.

The Accounting Assistant is a key position within the BIT Finance Team. This position will assist in the financial success of BIT, which has an annual budget of nearly $60 million and 400 personnel. BIT consists of five divisions - Administration, Data Centers, Development, Telecommunications, and South Dakota Public Broadcasting. This position will be on a finance team of four and each member of the team works in cooperation with one another to ensure the financial success of BIT.

Primary duties include:

  • auditing and coding all direct vouchers, travel vouchers, and non-cash vouchers for the department;
  • preparing daily deposits;
  • updating various databases;
  • tracking central services payments;
  • entering items into the state accounting system;
  • assisting vendors and staff with questions on payments or travel questions;
  • sorting and preparing files for storage per records retention;
  • maintaining up-to-date knowledge of procedures, polices, and laws relevant to financial operations.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

An accounting degree or accounting courses and/or prior accounting work experience is preferred. Experience with the state accounting software system is also preferred.

Knowledge of:

  • Microsoft Excel, Pivot Tables, and Query.

Skill to:

  • complete vouchers and non-cash vouchers in state accounting system;
  • make timely and accurate decisions.

Ability to:

  • analyze data to determine accuracy;
  • communicate information clearly and concisely;
  • provide guidance to all staff on travel requirements and regulations;
  • work with customers and staff to resolve issues and develop solutions;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationship with other state agencies;
  • interpret rules and regulations;
  • use a computer and keyboard;
  • prioritize and complete work by established deadlines;
  • follow established procedures.
