Summary

Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), the University Park Police Department is comprised of 42 sworn officers and 21 non-sworn employees. The City of University Park has a population of approximately 24,000 residents and is home to Southern Methodist University and the George W. Bush Presidential Center. The Department is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Chief of Police, which is an exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Duties

  • Commands division operations by conducting meetings; evaluating personnel and performance; making personnel assignments; developing and managing the budget; identifying training needs; reviewing use of force incidents for adherence to policy; conducting inspections; approving purchases; entering payroll data; and reviewing personnel investigations and recommending discipline.
  • Acts as division representative for staff level operations by conducting meetings; performing special assignments; evaluating department issues and concerns; recommending solutions; representing the department at meetings and professional organizations; assuming leadership in the absence of the Chief; reviewing and recommending policies; completing strategic plans; developing and coordinating promotional exercises; and representing the Department to the public and the media.
  • Completes general law enforcement duties by reviewing calls for service and criminal offense and arrest reports, monitoring criminal investigations, evidence collection and case filing procedures, and assuming command over major incidents and taking enforcement actions.
  • Maintains inventory of uniforms and equipment; issues equipment to new employees; makes orders and picks up uniforms and equipment items when ready; general quartermaster duties and other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree and advanced training in law enforcement management.
  • Ten (10) years of experience in law enforcement, five (5) years of which are in progressively responsible supervisory roles.
  • Peace Officer Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.
