Kenyon College is conducting a national search for a motivated and experienced football coach to be our new Defensive Coordinator. We take great pride in our rich football tradition and the next Defensive Coordinator will be a colleague who is willing to work hard to enhance the lives of our student-athletes academically, athletically, and within the community. This is a ten (10) month position with benefits that includes morning, evening and weekend responsibilities. Under the general direction of the Head Football Coach, this coach will assist with the responsibilities of the NCAA D-III football program in accordance and compliance with NCAA, NCAC, and Kenyon College policies and regulations. The Assistant Football Coach will work in conjunction with the head coach to fulfill the following responsibilities: coaching student athletes, mentoring assistant coaches, scouting opponents, recruiting various territories, and developing alumni contacts. This position will also serve as the Defensive Coordinator, responsible for managing all duties related to organization of the defensive staff, creating defensive schemes and playbook information and evaluating defensive personnel. Additional departmental responsibilities will be assigned in game management, teaching, and / or administration.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for managing all duties related to organization of the defensive staff, creating defensive schemes and playbook information and evaluating defensive personnel.
  • Responsible for game day calls of the defense, making adjustments and substituting players as needed.
  • Responsible for coaching a specific position.
  • Assist in all phases of special teams, as well as scout teams.
  • Recruit academically and athletically strong applicants for admission in the selective, highly competitive application pool at Kenyon College utilizing Front Rush software, including preparing promotional materials.
  • Responsible for managing a selected recruiting territory.
  • Coordinate locker room usage and student manager training and oversight.
  • Work in conjunction with athletic trainers to maintain student-athlete welfare.
  • Stay up-to-date with sport and coaching best practices in order to provide opportunities for all involved in the program to become students of the game by sharing knowledge of the sport.
  • All coaches are assigned additional duties in the areas of facility and event /game management and teaching. These responsibilities are determined annually by Coordinator of Lifetime Fitness, Game / Event Manager, Facility Manager(s) and Director of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation.

Other Expectations:

  • Serve as a member of the Athletics, Fitness and Recreation team, responsible for providing leadership, goals, and program implementation at a fully residential campus housing 1700 undergraduate students.
  • Develop and maintain mutually supportive and collaborative working relationships with student affairs colleagues, faculty, and other campus partners to accomplish shared objectives and tasks.
  • Lead and assist with designated departmental, divisional, and/or College committees, initiatives and processes.
  • Develop meaningful connections with students, staff and faculty by being available and visible on campus
  • Assist with special projects and duties, as needed.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and compliance with the College’s and Department of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation policies and procedures as well as the North Coast Athletic Conference and NCAA constitutions, bylaws, legislation and regulations.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the Department of Athletics’ student-athlete handbook, and the Student Affairs and College’s mission statements.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Directly supervise assistant coaches, interns, and student workers on a daily basis.
  • Hire, assign, train and supervise student workers (if responsible for game management).

Working Conditions:

  • Some heavy lifting / moving equipment is required.
  • The working schedule is not traditional nor regular: early morning, day, late evenings, weekends are required, as may be work during college breaks and summers.
  • Travel for athletic contests, recruiting, coaches meetings and convention/caucus attendance is required.
  • The ability to obtain College driver certification is desirable.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Five or more years of college coaching with experience at the Division III level preferred.
  • CPR, First Aid and AED Certification is required (and can be completed after hire).
