GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Mental Health Assistant will deliver attendant care, respite care, psychosocial rehabilitation and independent living skills to consumers as directed by supervisor. The Mental Health Assistant will provide direct one-on-one supervision of consumers and work directly from the Treatment Plan to help them learn independent living skills, complete specific goals, or help stabilize them in crisis situations to avoid out of home placement. Mental Health Assistant will demonstrate flexibility in being available to work as client need arises.

Provides attendant care, independent living skills, respite and psychosocial rehabilitation individual and group services. Majority of service contacts happen out of the office in natural settings.

Accessible to client’s and families during all scheduled work hours. Must work flexible days and hours to meet consumers and families needs. Will complete on-call duties as assigned. Consistently conveys that the Clients and their families are the highest priority.


  • Maintains 100 hours of billable time per month – 1200 for 12 months of the year – December through November.

Documentation is a key factor in our record of client progress and a key factor in our ability to bill for services provided. Our staff will ensure proper times of services are recorded as well as act responsibly in choosing billing codes and diagnoses that accurately reflect the client’s issues and allow the Agency to bill/collect for said services to take that (financial) burden from the client. Documentation is to be completed with dignity and respect toward the client knowing the client has full access to his/her chart


Documentation:

  • Maintains a written, chronological record of consumer’s progress toward meeting identified goals and objectives. Progress notes are entered in the EMR the same day of service (or within 48 hours of the service)
  • Billing Sheets are completed and turned in within 48 hours of the service. All activities for the day need to be reflected and the hours reflected should be within 30 minutes of the hours clocked in Timeforce. Assure accuracy before submitting.
  • Notes demonstrate a clear understanding of service billed.


Client Care: Works flexible hours and days to meet consumer and family needs. This may include weekend, evenings, nights and holidays.


  • Provides community based services as directed by the consumer’s treatment plan and/or plan of care as assigned by Supervisor.
  • Assist in planning and implementing group’s activities as assigned by Supervisor.
  • Strengths based model of care is evident in practice, progress notes, treatment goals and other documentation.
  • Will complete assist with weekend/evening hours and on-call hours as assigned by Supervisor.

HEDIS Measures: “Wellness and Promotion: - Compass believes in treating all health aspects of our clients – both behavioral health and physical health.

  • Will address at a minimum of one time monthly some measure of health and wellness and document this in the progress note.

Examples of HEDIS measures: KBH/Annual Physical, Annual Dental Checks, Fitness Activity Level, BMI to manage weight, etc.

  • Participates in quality improvement, risk management, utilization management, and other committees and activities as necessary for the Region.
  • Participates in community activities that promote awareness of behavioral health issues (provides or participates in at least two (2) community education or interagency activities per year; as assigned by supervisor)
  • Participates in Training activities to promote professional growth, create new programming which in turn adds to the ability to provide excellent services to our Clients
  • Represents Compass in a professional manner (projects positive, service oriented attitude to community and co-workers), and maintains good relationships with referral sources in the community and is appropriately groomed and attired.
  • Attends work on a consistent basis (less than six unscheduled absences per year)
  • Completes and keeps up to date all required trainings (CPR/First Aide, CPI and TCI.)
  • Exhibits dependability and flexibility in working with supervision and co-workers, and is able to adapt to changing needs and client demand for services as evidenced by meeting established deadlines, following through on tasks, and meeting established goals
  • Stays positive – inspires others to be positive about our Mission and what we do
  • Adapts well to changing conditions and demands – approaches change as a necessary and inevitable aspect of organizational life
  • Addresses concerns/issues/misunderstandings with Supervisor as they arise to help problem solve and make them better

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS: Utilizes computer effectively, including e-mail, word processing and spreadsheet programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: : Must be at least 21 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent.. Be familiar with community resources. Possesses good interpersonal skills. Possesses an interest and investment in working with children who experience Serious Emotional Disturbance (SED). . Ability to work as a member of a treatment team in providing a continuum of services to consumers and their families. Have completed or will complete any required training within six months of employment with Compass including completion of a state approved basic training program, and maintain any state training requirements.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Employee is required to complete appropriate on-line certifications through Training Teams prior to billing of services. Must complete CPI prior to billing a Crisis Service Code. Must complete CPR/First Aide within six months of hire.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is exposed to a typical office environment and interaction with many different persons. In addition, the employee travels by automobile and is exposed to changing weather conditions. Must have a valid Kansas Driver’s License and be insurable under the Mental Health Center’s policy in order to operate a Center vehicle. The employee will interact with many different persons in varying stages of recovery from their mental illness.
