Adult ESL Instructors (PT through March 2024, grant-funded)

Part time temporary, 6–7 hours per week; daytime, evening and weekend sections

The South Brunswick Library, located halfway between the metropolitan hubs of NYC and Philadelphia, is home to a diverse, growing community that values all the services the Library provides. Our staff is dedicated to providing excellent customer service through innovative programming, community engagement and outreach, and our Mobile Branch.

Our Library is embarking on an $10.2 million construction project to expand and repurpose our existing building. We are excited to bring new team members aboard as we build our next chapter at the South Brunswick Public Library. Renovations will include a new auditorium, state-of-the art meeting room, an expanded Teen Room, group study rooms, an instruction lab and more.

The South Brunswick Public Library is seeking instructors to teach differentiated levels of high-quality ESL classes for adults at our Library in accordance with the Community Library Adult Literacy and Career Pathway program (CLALCP), which aims to expand adult literacy services in the Garden State.

Ideal candidates, under the direction of the program coordinator, will be experienced and engaging teachers of English that will seek to improve participants' English language skills and support them in building confidence speaking English so that they feel better able to navigate systems and interactions, including career pathways. Teachers are needed for daytime, weekend, and evening sections. Students will be assessed using CASAS Life & Work and placed into leveled classes. Classes are anticipated to be in-person at the Library, but may transition to virtual depending on construction progress.

A successful candidate will share the library’s core values that focus on providing opportunities, lifelong learning, and connecting our community.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Teaching ESL classes for adults focused on reading, writing, and speaking.
  • Taking and maintaining accurate student attendance records.
  • Preparing classroom materials / lesson plans according to the established curriculum and adapting materials where needed.
  • Engaging in occasional observation/feedback sessions with project coordinator and representatives from the NJ Department of Labor.
  • Assessing students mid-and post-instruction, and providing feedback on student advancement.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience working as a second-language instructor (adult teaching experience preferred).
  • An understanding of practical second-language acquisition theory.
  • An understanding of English grammar structures.
  • Positive attitude and ability to provide dynamic, effective, and engaging lessons.
  • Speak, write, and communicate in English effectively.

Valid New Jersey DOE Instructional Certificate that includes English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement OR Masters in TESL, TESOL or a very closely related field strongly preferred.

Compensation: The 2023 rate for this position is $52/hr, inclusive of prep and travel (sections range from 64–98 instructional hours, depending on session). Successful candidates will have the opportunity to teach multiple sections.
