Laboratory Assistant OR Laboratory Research Technician Assistant (ID: 230000B9)
The University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Medicine is seeking a Laboratory Assistant or Laboratory Research Technician Assistant in the laboratory of Dean Mark Gladwin.

Under supervision, performs routine bacterial culture and may perform biochemical/molecular tests for recombinant protein production according to standardized protocols. May perform protein purification using fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC).

Laboratory Assistant

Primary Duties:

  • Under supervision, performs routine bacterial culture for protein production under sterile conditions
  • Performs routine laboratory duties, such as autoclaving, preparing bacterial culture media, chemical solutions, and buffers
  • Under supervision, performs basic absorbance spectroscopy-based assays
  • Compiles and maintains research data using relevant computer software applications, such as MS Office Excel
Laboratory Research Technician Assistant

Primary Duties:

  • Performs simple routine procedures and perform routine bacterial culture for protein production under sterile conditions.
  • Performs routine laboratory duties, such as autoclaving, preparing bacterial culture media, chemical solutions, and buffers.
  • Performs basic absorbance spectroscopy-based assays and may perform basic biochemical/molecular techniques under supervision.
  • Compiles, maintains, and may analyze research data using relevant computer. software applications, such as MS Office Excel.
  • Performs general housekeeping of laboratory, and operation of laboratory equipment.
  • Maintains chemicals and equipment inventory.
  • Assists in collection, recording, and entering research data.

Qualifications

Laboratory Assistant:
Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Experience: Six months laboratory work experience.
Preferred Experience: Excellent record keeping and communication skills are required
Previous experience with bacterial culture is preferred
Previous experience with bacterial culture and basic biochemical/molecular techniques is preferred

Laboratory Research Technician Assistant:

Education: Associates degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
Preferred Experience: Animal handling experience is preferred, but not required.
Excellent record keeping and communication skills are required
Previous experience with bacterial culture and basic biochemical/molecular techniques is preferred
Other: May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.

Other:

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Based on the duties of both positions, selected candidates are eligible to participate in the Bargaining Unit (Union).

Salary Range:

Laboratory Assistant- $34,146.34 - $36,097.56

Laboratory Research Tech Assistant- $41,951.21 - $43,902.43
