BASIC FUNCTION:

The Medical Assistant assists the provider and front desk staff with welcoming, scheduling and assisting patients with their healthcare needs.


SHIFT DAYS/HOURS:

Primary Care is open 7:30am 5:00pm, Monday thru Friday. Hours will vary based on need.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High school diploma or GED required. Medical Assistant diploma, CNA certificate, and/or on-the-job training with demonstrated skills preferred.

Experience: Previous medical office experience preferred.

Certificates, License, Registrations: Maintains current BLS certification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Trained in phlebotomy, vital signs, injections, and basic lab tests. Maintain compliance with HIPAA and patient confidentiality. Ability to work with all staff and patients in a courteous manner. Promptness and accuracy are paramount to success of this position.

Physical:

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, and/or 10 pounds of force frequently, or negligible constantly. Walking or standing to a significant degree or sitting constantly and pushing/pulling controls. Must spend most of the day standing and provide patient assistance in and out of rooms and on and off exam tables.

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Supervision Received: Clinic Charge Nurse

Supervision Exercised: None

Other: Patients, families, visitors and other hospital personnel, medical staff, other medical personnel, community program personnel, EMS personnel, and members of the public.

EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS:

This position is classified by OSHA as a Class I position and is exposed to odors, infections, and body fluids.

EQUIPMENT USED:

Blood pressure cuff, thermometer, stethoscope, computer, scales, phone, fax, centrifuge, hemocue, glucometer, HCG Rapid Strep, UA dipsticks, specimen collection, and syringes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepares patients for visit by gathering vitals and lab draws as directed.
  • Explains collection process, injections, ear lavage, etc. to patient
  • Performs tests required for rural health clinic and QC and calls in the results
  • Assist in making patient referral appointments
  • Properly enters patient information into the patients electronic health record
  • Keeps clinic stocked with all supplies (lab, medical, pharmacy and laundry)
  • Files progress notes, lab results, and any other correspondence in the patients electronic health record.
  • Assists and fills in at the front desk as needed, including but not limited to answering the phone, scheduling patient appointments.
  • Maintains compliance with all policies and procedures of Amberwell Hiawatha and the rural health clinic.
  • Other duties as assigned.
