The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension, Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) is a United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) funded program to help limited-income families and youth acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and changed behavior necessary to improve their diets in normal nutrition. Extension Program Assistants with this grant in Miami-Dade County will teach general nutrition to groups of low-income families; travel to teaching sites within Miami-Dade County required; collect demographic and impact data for evaluation; and learn through on-the-job training skills and information related to teaching nutrition to low-income audiences.

  • Program Delivery: Participates in on-going recruitment of audience for nutrition education classes for the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program. Teaches nutrition education classes to low-income participants at various community and government sites. Sites include schools, parks and recreation departments, churches, health departments, and other locations. Lifting and carrying teaching materials and/or supplies up to 50 lbs. May require standing, stooping, pushing and/or pulling. May require standing for prolonged periods of time both indoors and/or working outside to perform teaching lessons. Some classes are one-time, but most are in-depth, requiring a minimum of six lessons for each group of participants. Collects demographic data on clients served. Evaluates knowledge gained and behavioral changes through approved evaluation tools. Refers participants to government and local agencies for assistance, such as food stamps, commodities, etc. Markets the program through health fairs and other locations where a booth or display is appropriate. Works in coordination with appropriate agency staff to ensure the delivery of quality services to the EFNEP clients.
  • Planning: Plans and prepares nutrition education lessons. Continues to improve knowledge of subject matter and teaching methods.
  • Training: Develops and improves knowledge of food and nutrition subject matter, becomes more proficient in determining client needs, understands various methods of reaching and teaching the clientele, and develops proficiency in using the EFNEP teaching materials via participation in orientation training, continuous on-the job training, and self-study. Continuous on-the job training is presented by the supervising faculty on a bi-weekly basis. Thorough training for virtual education will be provided.
  • Travel: Stays within assigned travel allocation while traveling to assigned teaching sites from the official headquarters. Travel is by means of a personal vehicle, for which mileage will be reimbursed monthly at the current state rate. Occasional out-of-county travel may be required.
  • Reporting: Maintains accurate records and reports on clients and personnel requirements. Submits reports on time for Supervisor or other designee. Works with agency staff in utilizing records, reports, and other resources to assist in program implementation and in evaluating program impact.
  • NEs will need to lift and carry teaching materials and supplies up to 50 lbs. Work may require standing, stooping, pushing and/or pulling. Job may require standing for prolonged periods of time both indoors and/or working outside to perform teaching lessons.
  • NEs will achieve and maintain food safety certification (SafeStaff).
  • Normal Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8-5. May required occasional night and weekend hours due to the nature of the program.

$17 / hour

Minimum Requirements:
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Valid Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications:

Able to plan and deliver nutrition education lessons. Knowledge of nutrition or previous teaching experience desirable. Able to follow directions and complete reports. Experience working with low income clients helpful. Ability to work both as a team and independently preferred. Working knowledge of MS Office programs (Word, Teams, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc) and Zoom. Bilingual (English, Spanish) highly preferred.
