Background & Territory

The Procurement Manager manages and supervises Timber & Log procurement and oversees Log Sales. Reports to the Eastern Business Unit (EBU) General Manager and NWH Senior Leader. We have an immediate opening, seeking a full-time Procurement Manager and Forester to support our territory in northwest Pennsylvania.

Successful candidate shall personally promote and encourage a safe working environment for themselves, fellow employees, suppliers and contractors.

Key Responsibilities:

Timber Procurement

  • Timber Procurement
  • Review timber prospectus list and schedule appraisals of timber sales with procurement foresters
  • Assist with, if necessary, timber cruise to determine volume and value of timber sales
  • Review and evaluate appraisals with procurement foresters and assign timber value
  • Prepare or review bid forms and prepare bid deposits
  • Track and recover bid deposits of unsuccessful sales
  • Coordinate Timber Purchasing with Lumber Sales
  • Contract Negotiation and Execution
  • Negotiate and review timber contracts for accuracy and acceptable language
  • Review courthouse documents to ensure seller’s title
  • Prepare and execute contracts and plan for payments and deposits
  • Ensure timely payments of purchased timber
  • Review and approve road building invoices and cutting, skidding, and hauling payments
  • Review expiration dates of timber contracts and manage the timely harvesting of short-

term timber sales

E. Review timber harvest results and profitability

  • Oversee daily activities of procurement foresters
  • Evaluate procurement forester performance
  • Track and recover performance bonds associated with timber sales

Timber Procurement Staff

  • Manage all aspects of the timber procurement staff (approx. 8) including hiring and training professional foresters to ensure appropriate levels of standing timber and log yard inventory.
  • Daily coordination of procurement and harvesting activities
  • Conduct performance reviews, address complaints and employee relations issues, and resolve problems of the staff.
  • Ensure staff adheres to company policies.
  • Assist the EBU General Manager and Procurement Director in all aspects of Timber Procurement as necessary

Log Procurement

  • Evaluate and assign suggested log prices for purchase logs and timber sales
  • Review log purchase profitability, advances, and In Field log inventory
  • Review outstanding log purchases and ensure timely deliveries of logs purchased

Log Sales

  • Oversee, conduct, or assist with, all aspects of Log Sales in conjunction with Log Sale personnel
  • Review log sales for current log sale trends
  • Ensure timely receipt of payments for Log Sales

Log Pricing

  • Evaluate and calculate monthly log prices
  • Analyze sawmill reports and lumber pricing in conjunction with the managers and log buyers. Calculate log prices for procurement efforts.
  • Evaluate and develop standard log prices
  • Analyze sawmill reports and lumber pricing in conjunction with Product Marketing Manager and site managers and develop log prices.

Log Inventory

  • Review log inventories and coordinate activities of Procurement Foresters to ensure appropriate log inventories.
  • Direct and assist log yard personnel in physical inventory of logs at each plant and ensure timely processing of log deliveries.

Required Qualification

  • 5 years of practical log procurement experience, or equivalent.

Preferred Qualification

  • Two-year Forestry degree, or bachelor’s in forestry preferred.
  • Willing and able to work full-time out of our location in Marienville, PA and travel throughout the N. Appalachia region.
