Do you want to be a part of Texas’ newest industry? Do you love being on the water every week? We are The Texas Oyster Company (TOC), and we are the FIRST permitted Commercial Oyster Mariculture farm in Texas. We are located near Corpus Christi, Texas and have 8 acres leased from the state to grow oyster. We are a growing business and are looking to hire a full-time oyster technician (farmer) to work on the farm/lease. We have over 500 cages and will have over 3 million oysters to care for this year. This is an entry level position with opportunity to grow in the future.

Candidates should be comfortable working as a part of a team both in our processing center and out on the bay in all weather conditions. Our Oyster Farmers are supervised by the TOC President, General Manager and Assistant Manager. The employee in this role should be able to effectively follow direction and complete assigned tasks. This position exposes employees to an array of duties on the farm such as: receiving seed orders, gear delivery, moving cages, building cages and bags, cleaning, sorting, harvesting, processing oysters and oyster delivery, biofouling control, as well as raising and sinking gear as part of hurricane preparedness. Most of the jobs on the farm are physically demanding; there should be no aversion to manual labor. Must be able to lift 60-80 lbs. Must pass a background check from TPWD. Paid training. Pay based on experiences.

This is a new industry for Texas, so this is an opportunity to learn the skills to be a successful oyster farmer. Candidates are not expected to know about oysters farming but must be willing to learn and retain the knowledge. Previous experiences on the water or boats are a plus. Candidates should follow directions from supervisors and work well with team members at a good pace and manner.

Specific responsibilities:
  • Sort, tumble, wash, and pack oysters in fulfillment of orders per direction of Sales Manager.
  • Accurately measure and fill oysters into correct size bags and place on lease.
  • Harvest market sized oysters and plan for next harvest.
  • Carry out biofouling management plan by flipping cages per direction TOC managers.
  • Raise and sink gear in accordance with our hurricane plan.
  • Aid in repairing gear as needed both on land and on water.
  • Uphold sanitation and safety regulations within the processing center and on the water.
  • Take direction from supervisors and learn from experienced team members.
  • Take accountability for actions and learn from them.
  • Be available and flexible for work outside of 8 hours or 5 days a week (sunrise to sunset).
  • Maintain a clean/organized workspace.
  • Have a valid driver’s license.
  • Comply with all TOC standards and policies.
  • Good attitude.
  • Willing to learn and work hard.
Schedule:
  • 8-hour shift
  • Monday to Friday (flexible)
  • Weekend availability
