Mission

USTA Mid-Atlantic is seeking a full-time Tournament Manager to serve as primary lead for the organization’s competitive initiatives in an effort to grow tennis participation, advocate for improved access to the sport and grow and maximize relationships with community providers. This position reports directly to the Director, Competition & Youth Play and works collaboratively with the Competition & Youth Play team. The Manager will serve as a key member of the USTA Mid-Atlantic Programs & Services team to help grow the game of tennis and support the organization’s mission.

Responsibilities

Manage the organization’s competitive tournaments. This position will:

  • Manage all aspects of tournaments from onboarding and training new providers, through managing the entirety of the annual schedule of over 600 events for Adult, Youth, Family and Wheelchair.
  • Proactively review events in order to anticipate and mitigate challenges.
  • Be responsible for executing a robust tournament schedule and meeting or exceeding revenue expectations.
  • Be agile in mitigating schedule conflicts and provider expectations.
  • Analyze tournament participation, surveys, and revenue data to make informed, data driven decisions.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on Serve Tennis and Tournament Desk software, competitive tournaments and player rankings and ratings.
  • Assist with special events and projects including, but not limited to, National endorsements for adults and youth.


Grow and maintain strong relationships with community partners. This position will:

  • Facilitate relationships between the organization, and community providers with an emphasis on increasing the number of new community providers, particularly in underserved areas.
  • Develop and execute provider retention and growth initiatives.
  • Compose and prepare communications to both internal and external key stakeholders.
  • Respond to time sensitive tournament questions as needed, including outside of business hours if appropriate.
  • Manage and grow an extensive database of stakeholder contacts.


Serve as steward of resources to support Tournaments. This position will:

  • Produce reports for leadership on revenue, outreach, and timeline updates.
  • Maintain current and updated program resources, records, and timelines.
  • Create and deliver program resources and presentations.
  • Generate training & support materials to assist providers.
  • Perform any other duties as requested.


Support the Competition & Youth Play team in the mission to grow the game. This position will:

  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Manager, Competition & Youth Play to approve a robust offering of play events in addition to competitive tournaments.
  • Support the Youth Play Committee and Coaches Commission as needed.
  • Research, identify, and conduct outreach to new stakeholders in underserved areas.
  • Compile and track appropriate data to support department goals and initiatives.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Two to Five years related experience in program management required.
  • Highschool diploma or equivalent required.
  • Proficient with Google Suite, to include G-Mail, Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Drive.
  • Experience with Tableau, Zendesk, Serve Tennis preferred.
  • Experience with data analysis and making data driven decisions.
  • Must be able to professionally handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be able to learn quickly and handle multiple, concurrent tasks and assignments in an effective manner.
  • Basic understanding of tennis is preferred.

  • Who will the Tournament Manager be working with? The Tournament Manager, will be reporting to Rachel Kros, Director Competition & Youth Play, and will work closely with other members of the Competition & Youth Play Team as well as other departments such as Marketing & Communications.
  • Is your team currently remote? Will this stay remote long term? We do have an office in Herndon VA; however, we are operating remotely for the most part. This role can be based anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic region of MD, DC, VA & WV. This person may need to attend meetings in the Herndon, VA office as required. We have three all staff meetings a year at our Herndon, VA office.

What does the hiring process consist of? The first step is to APPLY!

Apply - We will be accepting applications Thursday 3/16/23 through Thursday 3/30/23. This may be extended depending on the number of applicants we receive.

Phone Interviews will be scheduled with the HR Manager. Phone interviews are typically 30-45 minutes.

Second Interviews will be scheduled with the Director, Competition & Youth Play and the Sr. Director, USTA Programs & Services, if selected based on the phone interview. This interview is typically 1 hour in length.

Technical Skills Pre-Employment Assessment will be required prior to final interviews.

Final Interviews may be scheduled with the CEO and Sr. Director, Programs & Services for final selection. This interview is typically 30 minutes in length.

Final Offer will be made by HR. If an offer is accepted, new hire paperwork and background check instructions will be sent electronically to the candidate for completion. Start date will be determined by mutual agreement and orientation will be scheduled once background check results are received.

This entire process from the date the posting ends to date an offer is made can take up to 3 – 5 weeks. Expected start date is Monday, April 24th, 2023.

  • How much does this position pay? How many hours is considered FT? This position is exempt and paid between $55,900 to $62,000 annually. Compensation is commensurate with experience. Bonus eligibility is determined annually. Full-time employees regularly work 35 hours per week.
