Job description
The New York City Law Department is accepting applications from current law students and recent law school graduates for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel (ACC) in the Family Court Division’s Juvenile Delinquency Unit. The Juvenile Delinquency Unit serves as the Presentment Agency in juvenile delinquency proceedings before the Family Court. Juvenile delinquency matters currently involve youth under 18 who have been arrested for conduct that would constitute a crime if they were adults. The goal of these proceedings is to address the needs and best interest of the youth and to ensure the safety of the community.

Attorneys in the Family Court Division’s Juvenile Delinquency Unit carry a caseload and are responsible for all aspects of the practice. This includes community outreach and engagement, case investigation, motion practice, conducting extensive discovery, and courtroom litigation including pre-trial hearings, trials and dispositional hearings. The ACC’s borough assignment will include cross-designation as a Special Assistant District Attorney where they will draft cases and appear in the Youth Part of the Supreme Court. All division ACCs work a small portion of weekend, holiday and evening hours on a rotating basis throughout the calendar year.

Entry-level ACCs enter a rotation of entry-level assignments that include, but are not limited to, borough Intake, Weekend, Holiday & Evening Court, the Giglio Compliance and Review Unit, and the Division’s Youth Part practice. Each of these entry-level rotations give ACCs immediate case investigation and courtroom experience, including interviewing police officers and witnesses to screen new arrests; preparing and conducting pre-petition detention hearings; filing motions for protective orders; and drafting cases in the Youth Part of the Supreme Court. Weekend, Holiday & Evening Court assignments include a monetary stipend above the base salary and a car service home each night.

Minimum Qual Requirements

All candidates must be either: (1) Graduates of an ABA-approved law school who are either admitted to practice in New York State or have their application for admission pending with the New York State Bar, or (2) Scheduled to have graduated in May or June 2023 and have passed the MPRE, NYLE and UBE during law school or be scheduled to take the first available MPRE, NYLE and UBE after law school graduation.
