Performs a variety of functions that support the patient care provider, physician and other staff while demonstrating professional conduct and a patient centered focus. This includes but is not limited to escorting patients and visitors throughout the hospital. A computerized transport system enhances the timely delivery of the patient or visitor to and from their destination.

Responsibilities:
    1. Escorts/transports patients and visitors safely, professionally, courteously and in a timely manner throughout the hospital. Follows standard operating protocols and procedures regarding unit and technologist notification, patient identification and proper equipment usage.
    2. Upon arriving to the floor, obtains the ticket to ride and medical record from the unit staff, introduces him/herself to the patient and verifies the correct patien tby checking two (2) patient identifiers. Utilizes appropriate infection control techniques as they apply to the patient condition including but not limited to proper hand hygiene and standard precautions. Uses proper body mechanics, lift devices, patient postioning techniques and equipment correctly while assisting the nurse or other patient care staff to transfer the patient on to or off of the transport equipment and while transporting the patient.
    3. Properly uses, maintains and stores equipment including routinely and consistenly checking equipment for cleanliness and safety. Lowers stretchers and beds to lowest levels to ensure patient safety. Inspects equipment prior to each patient transport and cleans equipment after each use. Identifies and removes from general use any defective equipment. Conducts equipment rounds collecting abandoned equipment to avoid clutter throughout the hospital. Returns oxygen cylinders to the to the appropriate area to ensure organizational compliance. Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
    4. Understands and uses transport software to identify and mark all milestones. As necesary, appropriately, with discretion and within a timely manner identifies any delays or conflicts with the tracking system. Works with the care provider to avoid and resolve delays as quickly as possible bringing the patient to their destination in a timely manner to ensure patient satisfaction and optimum patient throughput.
    5. Exhibits a professional, courteous and positive demeanor at all times to the patient, the staff, visitors and fellow hospital employees while honoring the privacy of others. Uses established scripts to greet, hand off and close with the patient to ensure a friendly safe, caring experience. Maintains open, clear and professional lines of communication with Transport management and uses effective interpersonal relationship skills in all interactions. Demonstrates respect for the other person in all interactions. Maintains a calm attitude in problematic situations and is helpful and cooperative with patients, visitors and all staff. Adheres to all hospital and department specific policies including but not limited to proper dress code, phone etiquette, attendance/punctuality and posted break/lunch schedules. When not actively engaged in a transport job, is in the Transport lounge area and actively seeks out assignments by proactively calling into the system. Performs other duties as requested by department manager or supervisor. Displays ID badge at all times. Attends staff meetings and a minimum of two (2) inservices/seminars throughout the year to enhance personal and professional growth and remains compliant with all hospital required mandatory education and training in a timely manner.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION

High school diploma or GED required. **Employees employed by YNHH effective 9/12/2012 as a result of the acquisition of the Hospital of St Raphael may meet educational requirements with the applicable combination of education and experience and demonstration of current competences.

EXPERIENCE

Successful completion of Hospital orientation.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Excellent communication skills. Ability to work effectively and respectfully with patients, physicians, co-workers and other staff within the organization. Should exhibit strong verbal communication skills. Must have a courteous and professional demeanor with the ability to work effectively in a high demand/high volume service department.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Requires the physical ability to transport patients by stretcher to all parts of the Hospital.

THIS POSITION IS COVERED BY THE TEAMSTERS COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT
Minimum - $15.00/hr.
Maximum - $25.44/hr
