Job description

This is a 2 year fixed term contract position based in an IFAW office in Germany, Netherlands, France or Germany
Staff work a hybrid schedule with 2 days/week in the office
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is looking for a knowledgeable, engaging, and energetic individual to support and coordinate outreach to the shipping industry as part of our wider European shipping campaign.
Ship speed reduction is a viable and achievable operational practice that can be undertaken by the commercial shipping industry to mitigate three key environmental pressures: underwater noise, ship strikes, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Reducing these threats from shipping would benefit marine life and the marine environment.
With an initial focus on European waters, our shipping campaign brings together years of effort by IFAW encouraging governments, the commercial shipping sector and ports to work together to achieve effective and sustainable changes to significantly reduce ocean noise and ship strike risk to cetaceans. The political and public reaction to the climate emergency also provides a timely opportunity to highlight the benefits of operational practices to help the shipping industry and countries achieve GHG reduction targets in the immediate term.
This campaign is ready to launch, with a significant public awareness and engagement campaign planned, targeting key stakeholders to encourage, support, and drive industry and regulatory change to reduce these threats. European waters provide the initial focus for this campaign as they host some of the busiest shipping routes globally and a significant number of major, international ports. Furthermore, European waters are home to cetacean populations at high risk of ship strike and ocean noise impacts. Industry and port outreach will be key to drive collaboration and enable the adoption of ‘whale friendly’ practices.
Reporting to IFAW’s Marine Project Manager, this position will work closely with IFAW’s European shipping team in France, Belgium/Brussels, Germany and the Netherlands. This position will be based in one of the IFAW European offices, with frequent travel expected within Europe. This will be a 24-month contract commencing July/August 2022, with extension if required.
Role and Responsibilities

  • Industry stakeholder mapping, with the goal of ensuring positive and effective IFAW introduction, engagement, and collaboration with key shipping and maritime stakeholders
  • Provide IFAW representation, building relationships and partnerships with existing and new contacts to initiate and cultivate IFAW relationships with shipping companies, ports, shipping associations and other maritime stakeholders
  • Provide recommendations, expert advice, tactical and strategic insight to the IFAW team
  • Work closely with IFAW’s European shipping team to plan industry engagement strategies, and develop communication and outreach materials to support campaign progress
  • Plan, organise, and deliver key stakeholder engagement events as set out in the campaign plan and in collaboration with IFAW colleagues
  • Regular reporting, budget tracking, and contributions to campaign monitoring and evaluation
  • Embody the values, mission, and vision of IFAW

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • MSc/MA degree in a relevant field preferred
  • Prior, proven project management experience essential
  • Detailed knowledge and solid experience of maritime industry relationships and with other key maritime stakeholders
  • A significant track record of campaign/project management, monitoring, and report writing
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, must be comfortable with public speaking and must be able communicate with a diverse audience from various cultural backgrounds
  • Demonstrated strategic thinker, with problem-solving acumen
  • Experience organising meetings/workshops with a range of audiences
  • Full working experience in English required, and fluency in the language of IFAW office location

At IFAW, we aim to create and foster a workforce that reflects and contributes to the diverse, global community in which we work to improve the lives of both animals and people. We are dedicated to fostering justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion so we actively encourage candidates from diverse backgrounds.
