STREETS MAINTENANCE EMPLOYEE
DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS
REPORTS TO: PUBLIC WORKS SUPERVISOR, PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Public Works Streets Maintenance Employee is a position within the Public Works Department that assists and performs maintenance activities in all functions of the Public Works Department. The Public

Works Streets Maintenance Employee, under direct supervision of the Operations Supervisors, is responsible for work primarily in the following areas: Streets, Storm Sewer, Cemetery, and Forestry.

Occasional work may be performed in Building and Vehicle Maintenance, Water and Sanitary Sewer.

The Public Works Streets Maintenance Employee will operate heavy equipment and conduct manual labor in order to perform necessary duties.

NOTE: The listing of this position as assigned to the Water, Sewer and Lighting Division or the Streets and Storm Water Division does not mean the employee only performs duties within a particular Division. Each employee is required to perform all duties assigned, regardless of whether these duties are or are not listed on this Job Description.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

Perform all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.

Read and understand job orders and follow through with the orders under minimal supervision.

Operate motor vehicles and equipment associated with Street Division functions including, but not limited to: front-end loader, pavement roller, mowing tractor, zero turn riding mowers, tractor/back- hoe, skid steer, sweeper, leaf vac, aquatic plant harvester, arial bucket truck, and various sizes of dump trucks, jet vac truck, and other related vehicles and power equipment as required.

Operate trucks and trailers of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies.

Excavate with hand tools efficiently to expose underground utilities. Guide operator verbally or with hand signals to prevent damage to underground utilities.

Assist in laying/rolling of asphalt, filling potholes and sealing cracks in streets, pathways and parking lots using shovels and lutes. When needed operating rollers, trucks, pavement router, tar kettle, skid steer and associated equipment in the paving and maintenance of asphalt streets, alleys, and parking lots.

During snow and ice control operations drive and operate dump trucks equipped with front plow, side wing plow, and salt spreader. When necessary, drive and operate dump trucks to haul snow.

Operate chain saws, brush chipper, pole saw, string trimmers, and pruning equipment for the care and maintenance of Forestry and Village grounds.

Repair and maintain concrete sidewalks, curb and gutter, and storm sewer catch basins throughout the Village using hand tools, air tools, and concrete saw. When needed operating pavement buster, back- hoe, and dump truck to excavate, repair and replace.

Repair and maintain Village cemetery including digging graves, mixing, pouring and finishing concrete headstone foundations, and landscape maintenance.

Maintain and install traffic signs and poles. Operate and maintain paint striper and perform various functions in the painting and marking of Village streets and parking lots.

Vacuum and collect leaves. Operate street sweeper

Keep all vehicles, equipment, and tool clean. Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment; service assigned equipment with fuel and oil; perform safety checks as required on all vehicles and equipment, notifying supervisor of any mechanical defects, repairs, or problems.

Performance of overtime responsibilities as required. Taking part in a rotating on call schedule outside of regular work hours. The on-call schedule includes carrying and answering Village provided work phone and responding to weather and other related emergencies for snow and ice removal, flooding, utility issues, tree debris removal, accident cleanup and other issues within 45 minutes of receiving call in any weather conditions.

OTHER DUTIES :

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Perform duties in Water, Sewer and Lighting Divisions, when required.

Work with other Public Works employees in the upkeep of all Public Works facilities including interior and exterior as needed.

Perform as a lead worker when so directed on emergency calls, using sound judgment and initiative in making decisions in accordance with established guidelines.

Establish and maintain a positive working relationship with members of the community and Co- workers.

Attend training courses, meetings and conferences as directed by supervisor.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); plus, one to three years related municipal public works experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in the repair and maintenance of streets, curb and gutter, storm sewers, ditches, sidewalks, building grounds maintenance, cemetery, snow plowing, and trees. Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines and equipment. Understanding of the Village geography, including streets, storm sewers and other landmarks. Knowledge of occupational and safety hazards and precautions necessary in the workplace.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write basic correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to supervisors and other employees of the Village.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Valid Wisconsin driver’s license and possession of Class B CDL. Tanker endorsement preferred.
